Another silly hypothetical

So something happens, burglery, fire, whatever, and you lose all your guns. Every single one. This hypothetical place you live in only allows one gun a month. (not handgun, one gun) Even before the insurance check arrives you have enough to get any gun you want, but have to decide which one. If you are a hunter then it's now the middle of hunting season.

So what do you buy first?

In real life I would borrow a shotgunfor hunting season and buy a nice rifle. (I hunt with shotguns the most because of local laws) But my hypothetical rules that out, I have to buy what I use. So for me I'll get an autoloading 12 gauge with about a 22 inch barrel and choke tubes. For me this will work for hunting and home defense. But it feels like a book lover buying a dictionary as his first book. Very utilitarian when there are nice revolvers and rifles out there.
 
I believe I'd purchase a suitably compact-yet-potent handgun for CCW such as a K9, K40 or something of that ilk. As soon as that check came in or I had the opportunity, I'd purchase a Mossberg 500, 590 or Remington 870.
After having purchased something to carry and something designated for home defense, I would resume my collection of C&Rs... and perhaps invest in a fireproof safe.


However, the answer to the question would be a compact pistol suitable for CCW.
 
You can realistically use a handgun for home defense, but you cannot realistically use either a rifle or a shotgun for personal protection outside the home.

I'd replace my carry piece, first.

Primary carry first (.45 or .40).
Summer/small concealment carry second (like my .38 snubbie).
Full-size pistol (Beretta 96 or 1911).
12-ga. shotgun
.30 cal. rifle.

In that order.

Carry gun first - I'd borrow for hunting since that seems to be allowed. Can't wait till next month to start replacing my favorites... This is gonna take years. :mad:
 
I don't carry(except in the car on long trips). With that in mind, here's my list in order:
1. 12 ga pump shotgun, probably a Rem 870(if strapped for cash, mebbe a Maverick), with 2 barrels. If I could only own *one* gun, it'd be a good 12 ga pump, or maybe an automatic(Rem 1100). In my area, I can hunt anything & it's one heckuva home defense piece.
2. .22 rifle. Rather than try to replace the old Browning, I might try a Marlin lever action. Always thought the Mountie looked like a real sweetheart, & it would handle .22 shorts for those pests around the house that need to be removed.
3. Deer rifle. Maybe a Model 70 FW, or the Classic Compact. No exotic calibers, I've had a .270 for many years, maybe that, or a .30/06 or .308 in the CC. If cash was tight, maybe a Savage.
4. Pistol. Maybe a 1911 .45 auto. I'd kinda like to convert the Glock 22 into one of those anyway!
 
Carry gun first.

Lately, I've been thinking about selling my Colt 1991 since I have plenty of 1911s to choose from, and it rarely sees rangetime. Now I think I may call my grandmother to see if she would be willing to let me store it at her house...
 
It's illegal for me to carry at work so for me losing all of them would not mean I died, but I see your point. I guess there are fewer hunters here than I guessed.
 
If I had to replace all of my guns
1st S&W 13-3 P&R 3"
2nd Marlin 1894C in 357
3rd Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter Bisley in 45 L Colt w/ Leupold 2x or 1-4x
4th Win 1300 or Rem 870 with 18.5" rifle sights, 22" vent rib & 28" vent rib barrels
5th Win Mod 70 Compact Classic in either 7mm-08 or 308
6th S&W 35 or 43
7th Colt woodsman
8th S&W 60-4
9th 1911A1 GI model, Colt or REM RAND
10th Ithaca 37 M&P 12 gauge
11th Ruger 10/22 with Butler creek folder.
Some where along the line another 65 round butt and a 4" pencil barrel, a S&W 19 -3 4" and have the barrel cut to 3", maybe a S&W 58,
Then I would have what is now a dream rifle made a Charles Daly Mini Mauser in 6.5 Grendel.

I keep forgeting a 642 and have a 940 cylinder fitted.
 
If I had to replace all my guns, and could do so only one at a time the first would be my 3" S&W 65LS, 6" S&W 57 or a new 1911 (possibly another Charles Daly but probably a SA or Kimber, though I am perfectly happy with the Daly). I don't live in a carry state so a full-size seems to make more sense to go first than a CCW size gun, though the Taurus 85 and/or Taurus PT 140 Millenium Pro would be tempting to get first. The first long-gun replacement would be 3 or 4 guns in and would be a lever rifle in a pistol caliber to replace my .45LC Winchester 94.

Actually though, I think a more interesting thing to think about (to me anyway) is, would you buy the same guns and if not what would you replace? For me while I'd buy another CZ 75B (I love mine) I'd probably buy a BHP first (don't yet have a BHP). I'd also probably not buy the Bersa and get something else (darned S&W style frame mounted decocker, ick, otherwise I love the gun though). Last, instead of the steel Taurus 85 I'd probably consider one in aluminium. Now in long guns there are quite a few changes (I don't go to the rifle range enough to really make it worth spending the $ on an AR, I'd probably get an AK instead of the SKS, I'd probably get a Mossy 590 instead of the Benelli Nova and instead of the .45LC Winchester 94 I'd get it in either .44mag or .357mag).
 
g26 first then kelt p3at then g17 then a sa7 classic underfolder then rem 870lh modified.

then id see about getting dupes of the glocks and a sa7 fixed stock.
then a 10/22 stainless synthetic and a 22/45 with 3"paclite upper and maybe a new savage crackshot for grins.(takedown of course)

pretty much sumz it up.
 
870... if I still need to hunt I can use it. Too late in the season to screw with sighting in a scoped rifle. Spare barrel and an 870 express is inexpensive and ultilitarian. I grew up hunting with an 870 and it IS my back up elk rifle.

Barring that, there is usually a spare rifle (or slug gun) in hunting camp (intentionally) so a 3 or 4 inch .357 wheel gun would be of interest.
 
First would be a quality 1903 sporter in 30-06, likely next an 1886 carbine, then a Smith 29 or Ruger SA 45. Probably wouldn't replace the one auto I now have.


I would respectfully disagree that one couldn't realistically use a rifle to defend themself away from home. I keep a rifle in my vehicle 99% of the time, and would prefer it before any handgun if given the choice and chance when needed.

I'd assume that for most of us hunting is recreational, and protection of ourselves and our families is higher on our list of priorties. [edit] If I could think of a way to say that that didnt make me sound like a smartaleck, I would rephrase it...[/edit]

Your assumption is correct for me though, I dont hunt. Like Ron White, I have no problems with killing an animal for sport, but its early, and its cold, I dont wanna go.

Would this law apply to private partyies? If the PtP transfer is not require to go through an FFL I would just get most of the replacements used.

The Replacements

I've got a couple that are family heirlooms and irreplaceable. Wouldn't even try. The ones I would replace are 1)carry peice, a 1911 2)12 ga. pump, very utilitarian 3).22 rifle, plinking and practice 4).308 bolt action. Onward according to whim from there.
