Wonder how often the NRA-ILA updates this list? Several of the people listed on it are dead, and at least one -- Rene Russo -- claims to be a handgun owner and recreational shooter.

ACLU's views

Here is the ACLU's public policy on gun control, for better or for worse:

Gun Control (3/4/2002)

Why doesn't the ACLU support an individual's unlimited right to keep and bear arms?
BACKGROUND
The ACLU has often been criticized for "ignoring the Second Amendment" and refusing to fight for the individual's right to own a gun or other weapons. This issue, however, has not been ignored by the ACLU. The national board has in fact debated and discussed the civil liberties aspects of the Second Amendment many times.

We believe that the constitutional right to bear arms is primarily a collective one, intended mainly to protect the right of the states to maintain militias to assure their own freedom and security against the central government. In today's world, that idea is somewhat anachronistic and in any case would require weapons much more powerful than handguns or hunting rifles. The ACLU therefore believes that the Second Amendment does not confer an unlimited right upon individuals to own guns or other weapons nor does it prohibit reasonable regulation of gun ownership, such as licensing and registration.

IN BRIEF
The national ACLU is neutral on the issue of gun control. We believe that the Constitution contains no barriers to reasonable regulations of gun ownership. If we can license and register cars, we can license and register guns.

Most opponents of gun control concede that the Second Amendment certainly does not guarantee an individual's right to own bazookas, missiles or nuclear warheads. Yet these, like rifles, pistols and even submachine guns, are arms.

The question therefore is not whether to restrict arms ownership, but how much to restrict it. If that is a question left open by the Constitution, then it is a question for Congress to decide.

ACLU POLICY
"The ACLU agrees with the Supreme Court's long-standing interpretation of the Second Amendment [as set forth in the 1939 case, U.S. v. Miller] that the individual's right to bear arms applies only to the preservation or efficiency of a well-regulated militia. Except for lawful police and military purposes, the possession of weapons by individuals is not constitutionally protected. Therefore, there is no constitutional impediment to the regulation of firearms." — Policy #47

ARGUMENTS, FACTS, QUOTES

"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

— The Second Amendment to the Constitution

"Since the Second Amendment. . . applies only to the right of the State to maintain a militia and not to the individual's right to bear arms, there can be no serious claim to any express constitutional right to possess a firearm."

— U.S. v. Warin (6th Circuit, 1976)

Unless the Constitution protects the individual's right to own all kinds of arms, there is no principled way to oppose reasonable restrictions on handguns, Uzis or semi-automatic rifles.

If indeed the Second Amendment provides an absolute, constitutional protection for the right to bear arms in order to preserve the power of the people to resist government tyranny, then it must allow individuals to possess bazookas, torpedoes, SCUD missiles and even nuclear warheads, for they, like handguns, rifles and M-16s, are arms. Moreover, it is hard to imagine any serious resistance to the military without such arms. Yet few, if any, would argue that the Second Amendment gives individuals the unlimited right to own any weapons they please. But as soon as we allow governmental regulation of any weapons, we have broken the dam of Constitutional protection. Once that dam is broken, we are not talking about whether the government can constitutionally restrict arms, but rather what constitutes a reasonable restriction.

There's several dead people on the OP's list.At least 9 on my count.
Are they still exhorting from the crypt?
You gotta laugh at so-called celebs and Hollywood.

Celebrities, particularly actors/actresses, earn their salary by living in a fantasy world... that is, after all, what acting is.

So is it really that surprising that they are totally out of touch with reality?

I wonder what the ACLU will say to their 2nd ammed. stance if SCOTUS rules favorably in DC v Heller...

thats not true, the 2nt amendment was drafted with the right to personal defense in the front of their minds, i forget which founding father or figure but that was his intention

Jimmy Madison, probably, while chilling out after a hards days work on his ranch.

Interesting list. Too bad you also include dead people (Julia Child).

Most there are considered liberals and Liberals seldom allow facts to interfere with their hysteria.

Media facts...the ultimate oxymoron!

My general notion is about actors is as follows:

Everyone wants to be an authority on something. To feel like they know how to do something better than everyone else and to have it be meaningful trait.

Take a journeyman carpenter, and they will consider themselves an expert on some kind of finish work to the younger carpenters. Take a expierenced mechanic, a janitor,... On the white collar side, a professor will be an expert in their research area, an engineer will be a team of engineers and will be the expert at their area. (Notice all of these people worked to gain some sort of qualification)

What are older actors good at? When they get older, they realize that people surround them for their fame, not for their acting skills nor their ideas. Add this in to the fact that they have way too much time on their hands and too much money. So, to add meaning to their lives and to become an expert on something, they choose pick up a cause and fight for it.

Maybe it is just me. I really like say, Eddie Vedder or Chris Cornell as vocalists. However, when either of them starts using their fame to spew politics I shut the TV off. I pay singers to sing, doctors to cure, actors to act, and janitors to clean my floors. Unless they are going to say something related to what I pay them for, I DO NOT CARE. I don't care even if they are saying something I agree with. If they want to get into politics, they need to get qualified. Being a singer/song-writer does not qualify you to be an authority on anything but singing and song writing!

Too bad mainstream America is too bored with their daily lives that they actually give these people the time of day.

"...at least one -- Rene Russo -- claims to be a handgun owner and recreational shooter."

Yes, but she doesn't want YOU to own a handgun.

I'd rather see a list of pro gun celebs. We can pretty safely assume the rest are antis.

I'll support the ACLU when they start supporting ALL of our rights, not just the ones they prefer.

As for celebrities, I'm in the camp with FTA84. Their talent in one area (e.g. acting) gives them no more insight into any other area (e.g. politics) than Joe Blow down the street. I couldn't care less what a celebrity wants me to think, and anyone who is influenced solely by what they are told by their "idols" is a weak-minded human being.

-Mark

I'd love to match up the celebrity types on the list that are virulently anti gun, but have no problem making movies where they shoot people and demonstrate unsafe gun handling for kids to see and believe.

Nothing like a little hypocrisy to wet your appetite.

I guess it's OK to be against guns ... as long as it doesn't impact your paychecks.

It's funny that Brady lists a lot of these characters and organizations as supporting them, but somehow they can't find any list of their contributing membership to show us how the "Majority of Americnas favor more gun control".

Of course these are the same people that feel that taxes are too low for everyone and need to be raised, then call their accountants to make sure they have the necessary tax dodges in place to protect their money.

Of course these are the same people that feel that taxes are too low for everyone and need to be raised, then call their accountants to make sure they have the necessary tax dodges in place to protect their money.

Reminds me of this bleeding liberal I work with. He gets flamingly (red faced and gesturing) upset about two things.

1) Lack of social programs (He risked getting fired by refusing to work on a team with a coworker who wanted to vote for McCain b/c of the Hillary/Obama social programs)
2) Paying taxes (He actually cried at his desk about taxes this year...)

So he is single and makes $70 - 80k a year and thinks that he is not responsible to foot the bill for the social programs he wants. I ask, then who is? Must be everyone that makes more than him.

Sounds like socialism to me.

But P. Diddy is still pro-gun, right? :p

Thanks for the updated heads-up - been awhile since I read the lists. I wish you would put them in alphabetical order.

I've been regularly attending a Church of the Brethren for 2 years and have yet to hear a single sermon with even the briefest mention of gun control, nor have I seen an announcement in the bulletin or anywhere else. If you google "church of the brethren gun control" all the hits are either copies of this list or about mental health issues. They issued a press release after VT that said the shooting has raised issues about gun control but it does't take a position.

I couldn't find any evidence to suggest that it's the official position of the church that gun control is to be supported. Yes many historically have been pacifists and don't believe in war but that is a personal decision and not the same thing as calling for gun control.

Those of you noting that dead people are on the list should also note that this thread was born and died in 2003, and was raised from the dead yesterday to bring up the ACLU regarding Heller.

People for the American Way (PFAW)

Though I have no doubt they are anti's based on some of their other socialist positions, I specifically questioned them regarding their 2A stance and general firearms policy and they responded with this:

Good afternoon,
Unfortunately, I’m unable to provide such information as our organization does not have a formal stance on issues regarding the 2nd Amendment specifically.
If there is anything else I could help you find, I would be more than happy to.
Sincerely,
