.270, 7mm mag, 30-06

I've shot a .308 caliber rifle before so i know how the recoil feels. How do those mentioned compared to .308?

Also, show me your Rem. 700 series rifles modded or not. I saw a rem. 700 .270 @ Cabela's for under $400 NIB. Might wanna pick it up

The 270 will recoil about the same as the 308. The 30-06 will be noticeably more, but tolerable for most shooters. The 7mm is a bit more then the 30-06 and takes practice for many shooters to shoot comfortably.

All this is assuming they're shot from the same model rifle. Stock fit and weight of the rifle can play a part in how bad the recoil feels.
For instance my 308 is a Tikka T3 Lite and the recoil feels about like a 30-06 out of a Rem 700 but it's a little faster push. The T3 Lite is about a pound lighter.

^ What he said. My father's got a Weatherby Mark V that he had rebarreled for .270, has a decent amount less recoil than most .30-06 rifles I've shot. I never shot .308 but my understanding from the cartridge is it'd be a bit less than .30-06. This is given the same rifle, of course.

In identical rifles the recoil from lightest to most would be 270, 308, 30-06, then 7mag. Depending on the load and individual rifle the felt recoil could well be just the opposite, with the 7 mag feeling like it recoils less and the 270 the most. To my shoulder there is not a nickels worth of difference in how any of the 4 feel to me.

the 06 has more of a bang and the 7mm is like sharp bark. depending on the rifle the 7mm has a bit more kick to it. i have my 7mm done up finally and my brother in laws 270 kicks more than it does.

thanks.. i have been wanting to test out the .270, 30-06 and 7mm for quite some time now.. Planning on using it for hunting and do long range target shooting less than 500 yards for a couple hours whenever i can...

i guess i will ditch the 7mm then.

you guys know if there are any tactical/choate stocks to replaced the ugly stock on the rem 700 SPS? found a few pictures on google but no price

Bear in mind that the particular load will change the recoil. .270 will probably have the lightest recoil of the list, since it will probably shoot the lightest bullets unless you specifically look for something different.

WRT .270 and target shooting, the .270 has an odd-sized bullet. It's a popular caliber, but mainly for hunting. Obviously, you can shoot targets with it, and obviously, hunters practice with their .270 rifles.

If you're asking about a "tactical" stock, though, I have to think you may want it for more "serious" target shooting. For that, I believe the availability of .30 caliber and 7mm target-specific bullets is superior. .308 is a very common target round, and bullet makers oblige. Just FYI, since you seem to be looking at all the angles.:)

Just look up the muzzle energy of the loads you intend to fire. Each force has an equal and opposite reaction. More muzzle energy means more recoil, everything else being equal.

In most factory loads, the difference, if any, will be very small between the .308 and the .30-06. There is a difference, but it isn't very big and many people cannot tell the difference.

I have never fired a 7mm mag or a .270, but I think the 7mm mag is generally a heavier kicker using factory ammo.

For the federal vital-shok ammo, there is a whole whopping 130 fps difference in their 165gr offerings between the .308 (2700 fps) and their .30-06 (2830). I don't think I could feel that unless I had a very stiff buttpad or a steel buttcap on the rifle.

i found the 270 i had to kick the **** out of me, where as my 308 is tame as a kitten. in retrospect, the 270 had a 1/16" plastic butt plate, and my 308 has a thick limbsaver. sheesh.. maybe i shouldn't have sold the .270...

never noticed any difference...

...between the .270 and the .30-06, really...7mag was a little louder, .308 is a kitty cat compared ...200 fps slower than the .270 and .30-06 with a 150 grn.
