Any comments of the RUGER P-95?

If you like unreliable guns that jam and have nothing but problems you won't like the P95.

The triggers on Ruger's P series tend to be "gritty." Not the smoothest by any means, but a reliable gun nonetheless.

Yeah, the trigger on mine was a little gritty, but not terrible. When I got mine, I couldn't get 15 round mags for it. I bought some for the P85 and they seemed to fit the thing, but they weren't reliable. I've heard since that they won't interchange. I shot the thing in some IDPA, but it wasn't a lot easier to carry than my P90 and I just couldn't see carrying the thing with 11 rounds when my Kel Tec P11 fit in my pocket with 10 rounds, so I traded it off for another revolver, a Taurus M85UL, when I got my carry permit in 96. Now, there are 15 round mags available. :banghead:

What did help me decide to trade it off was a guy sold me a cherry, little used P85 with two factory 15 rounders for 200 bucks. I had the other three and they work in THAT gun. The trigger ain't any better than the P95s, though. The trigger in my P90 is sweet, the gun is unreal accurate, and I shoot it well. Normally, if I want to carry a big gun IWB, the P90 gets the nod, still. I keep the P85 because it's fun, is decently accurate, reliable, built like a tank, and everyone needs at least ONE large hicap 9. Heck, with politics the way it is, I probably should buy a few more high cap 9s.

The P95 is a well built, strong, reliable gun, but don't expect it to be the most concealable gun you could own for IWB, even hicap 9. It is fairly light until you put 16 rounds in the thing. LOL It's a danged good buy, though, reliable, well built gun for the money.

My P90 defies that logic.

BTW, even the single action trigger on that P85 kinda sux. I've felt worse, but it ain't great. The P90's trigger is just sweet and the transition from DA to SA is natural. The P90 is the jewel in the P series, I'm convinced.

I saw a post on the Ruger Forum message board where a guy had to send his gun to Ruger because of a problem that turned out to be in the frame of the gun, so the company sent him a new gun. But the new gun was assembled with the wrong hammer--one that was meant for a different model! So he ended up having to send in that one too. Haven't heard what happened after that, but I can understand the guy's frustration.

A bit off the original topic but I'll add this. My P90 and P89 triggers are the same. P89 is heavier and grittier. P90 breaks like glass. I did a little reading and learned that the P90's fire control system is very different from the P85/89/95's.

The P90, I believe, was also originally intended as a 10mm gun, but the 10mm fell out of favor while it was still in development so they converted to .45ACP. As you say, built like a tank and scary accurate. I've posted some range reports on mine on TFL. My best group so far was a full 8 round mag in one hole slightly larger than a quarter at 7 yds, and I'm by no means a pro.

As to the P95. I really like the gun and will probably own one some day. If I were looking for an inexpensive CCW gun though I'd probably go with the Ruger P345. It's not much more expensive (Saw one at the Hickory gun show this past weekend for $380.00). It's slimmer and more concealable and it's a bigger caliber round.

The P95 is a decent gun. Its very reliable, but accuracy isnt the best. It was my first handgun, but I rarely shoot it anymore, since buying other stuff.

The Ruger P series guns feel loose and rattly to me, but they are dead reliable and reasonably accurate. For the price, they are a good value, but they will never have that quality feel that a Sig or HK will have. My $.02

The P95 seems to get much better marks over at the Ruger Forum than here. I've shot my friend's quite a bit and consider it an excellent pistol. In fact I intended to buy one but changed my mind at the store and bought a P97 instead. Most P series pistol triggers smooth out pretty good after a few hundred rds down range and PRACTICE. My P97"s double action pull is no worse than most DA revolvers and the single action pull is quite good now for a self defence gun. My older P85 is also pretty smooth after number of years shooting.

My buddy owns a P97.
The gun does not jam but the magazine catch is bcoming worn and will occasionally drop a loaded magazine.
This gun has had about 3500 rounds fired through it and the magazine catch issue came about just recently.

It isn't the most accurate 9mm on planet earth but the magazine catch issue is easy to fix and the gun was a very decent buy.

heh... isn't that obvious.

I bought one, the stainless version. It was cheaper than the rest of my other guns, it's just not the same in quality or accuracy as my glock/hk/beretta.
if this gun was so good, how come I had hard time selling it a while back? looks like nobody wanted to touch it with his borrowed neighbor's 10ft pole.
it's just not for me.

Ruger P-95

It's a reliable tough gun that takes everything I feed it including truncated conical cast bullets.

Gave it to my son who was in LUST for it (his 9mm was a CZ 52) and he shot commercial reloads in it and had a failure which required him to send it to Ruger for a $80.00 replacement barrel.

Turns out the barrel was strong enough to withstand a squib which had been fired upon with a second round. Both bullets emerged and the gun was undamaged outside of the bulged barrel which failed to allow function. He is happy he was uninjured and I am too.

I want their 45 acp polymer gun to replace the FEG GKK .45 I have consigned to the stable

Probably you were asking too much for it:p

Mine always throws the first round low, but that's pretty normal for any autoloader. Still, close to a one hole group gun at 25 yards. That left target has one inch grids.

Sandbagged 25 yard groups, left is 200 grain Speer JHP. Right is a cast 200 grainer from a Lee mold, tumble lube design bullet. The SWC is loaded over 5.0 grains of Bullseye. The flying ashtray load is my carry load, at least until I run out of those bullets which are now discontinued.

By comparison, the best groups I can get out of the P85 are in the 2 1/2" range and the P95 was similar, about 2.5" at 25 yards. Now, that's not great. Glocks tend to be more accurate. But, it ain't bad for a defensive pistol. I carry a Kel Tech P11 in my pocket daily for self defense and it only shoots about 3.5" at 25 yards which I consider plenty enough, especially considering the size of the gun and what other guns that size I've owned and do own now shoot at 25 yards. A gun need not be a bullseye accurate gun to serve in self defense. I'm generally good with a good that can put 'em into 4" or less off sandbags at 25. But, I do fall for accurate guns and this P90 is a gem. I tend to sell off the not so accurate ones, so the ones I've kept over the years have had a little artificial selection for accuracy. :D Oh, I've kept a few that weren't great for other reasons, but generally I select for accuracy.

Here are some P89 and P90 targets

P89

This first group is 10 shots free handed at 7 yds.

This next is 20 shots free handed at 7 yds.

This next is a target I was doing mozambique drills on. The shots are colorcoded. Each three shot mozambique string is a different color. The single shot centermass that's green was the last round in a 10 round mag.

P90

This one is an 8 shot group at 7 yds free handed.

and another:

All this was with cheap blazer brass and Rem UMC ammo too. I haven't tried any rested 25 yd shooting with either of these pistols. May give that a go on my next range trip.
