Any easy way to determine if mauser is '98'? -NT

A 98 will have a third locking lug on the bolt just in front of the bolt handle. That's the safety lug. It's meant to keep the bolt from going through your head if things go REALLY badly and the other two lugs shear off.

There are other differences but that's the quick 'n' dirty indicator of whether or not it's a 98.

There are alot of rifles designed similar to the mauser 98, here's a list of attributes all 98's have (as far as I know)
-Large claw extractor
-safety lug -a bolt lug on the rear of the bolt that sits on the inside of the rear of the receiver (versus on the outside of the receiver as on an 03 springfield)
--one piece firing pin
-Bolt cocks on opening
-2 large gas vents on left side of bolt
Here's a list of attributes found on military 98's:
- large halfround 'gas shield' on bolt shroud
-3 position safety
-simple 2 stage trigger
-Usually a firing pin replacemet tool on the stock (either a large donut on the buttstock, a hole drilled in a cupped buttplate, or a stock crossbolt that has a large indentation on one end, though I haven't seen any of these on a Yugo M48)
-stepped barrel
-rear leaf sight with inverted 'v' front sight

I'm sure I missed at least a few...
