Any experience with Steyr M9-A2?

Did an impulse buy. Something I never do with guns. My first time buying online and sight unseen. I know the name from high end target guns, and of course their military offerings. Price seemed too good to pass up ($400).

They have always intrigued me with the low bore and unique grip, but it seems like Steyr went out of their way to make the pistol ugly. I don't see many in shooting competition, so I regard it as a purpose built military gun along the lines of H&K, utterly reliable but adaptability and market appeal irrelevant.

Nope, never even thought of one. Kinda looks like it has a beard on a square jaw and the beginnings of a men's Asian ponytail........

Went on a Steyr jag a couple years ago; kinda liked the triangle sights, and adapted to the grip angle. Mine were not stone reliable, and only 10 round mags were available at that time.
Had a tough time even trading them away; my local shop complained about getting stung on some.
Now The Steyr AUG is another matter...

Had one for a short time. Unique pistol, for sure, but the grip felt huge for my medium sized mitts, and for whatever reason, I could not get the gun to shoot consistent groups to save my life. Accuracy (at least in my hands) was non-existent. Likely it was an issue with my technique with this particular gun, but man, I could not figure that thing out!

I have a first gen M9. It has been a reliable shooter. I shoot alot of cast bullets with shot gun powder and have not had any isues. Mine has the silly lock on the side that takes a handcuff key. It fits my hand well and is comfortable. It rings steel at 50 ft and my shooting buddies enjoy it as well.

I bought one just to try something different. Nice ergos, I do like the looks. Low bore Axis. It shoots good. Getting extra mags is pretty much only thru Steyr and about the same price as HK or Sig mags. I just wish I had gotten the full size slide not the compact

My only knowledge of Steyr are their target guns (really pellet guns), which are well regarded. Therefore I felt it would be better quality than a Glock. I got a deal so hopefully I can break even if I hate it.

I don't like the feel of a double stack Glock but I do consider them a good "zombie apocalypse" choice. This gun will fill that role as my others are low capacity target guns.

The worst I have read are strange sights, lack of tactile/audible trigger reset, and extreme grip angle. A lot of reviews have been very positive. I'll report back after I have had a chance to shoot it. I agree, much like H&K they are a quality manufacturer that doesn't target the American market. FWIW, I really like the H&K VP9.

Thanks guys for all the information, I appreciate it and this forum rocks.

I have a first generation Steyr M9 and found that the design and shape of the grip to be very comfortable, even with my smaller size hand. The gun is a bit wide but I read somewhere that it was originally designed around the .40 S&W cartridge. The trigger is not exactly the best of the bladed variety (tied for last place with an early Glock 17), being somewhat heavy and gritty.

But the thing I couldn't figure out was why did they put a pull down/push up safety lever inside the trigger guard??? It was close enough to the trigger that made it a bit of a challenge to use it! Not exactly the most ergonomic maneuver you want to try while handling a gun!

The trap sights were certainly different though they took some time to get use to them.

I almost bit on one a few days ago. A friend's wife didn't like it, and he liked his Sig P320 better, so he offered it to me for exactly the same price some place had it on sale new, and wouldn't budge. I like the grip a lot, but those sights are just odd to me.

For a while the first gen versions were floating around dirt cheap, I think I paid $250 for my M40.
Nice guns. The machining is extremely nice and is on par with H&K, much nicer than any Glock. Mine is about as reliable as a Glock in that it will eat my reloads but only if I'm somewhat careful to keep them in spec.
One bonus over a Glock for me, is the Steyr has standard rifling, not polygonal, so they can fire lead bullets safely, although i'll confess I fire cast lead out of my Glock and H&K without worrying about it too much.
The sights take some getting used to but are fairly OK.
The gun was designed by someone who worked for Gaston Glock and got tired of having his innovations rejected by Glock, so there are a lot of similarities and some refinements over Glocks.
For instance, the slide rails are triangular in cross section, which I guess serves to "self-tighten" the slide. Bore height is ridiculously low, and the ergonomics are much better than the Glock brick grip.
The safety was something he added to appease those who wanted one but was subsequently dropped in later generations. I don't use it and don't really like it, but its there if I want it and its out of sight-out of mind if I don't.
The magazines of the first gens had better polish and bluing than most guns.

Well Reinz, just wait until you see Atlantic's price.

Maybe mine was worth more (or less) because it is half green (LOL).

Let's compare notes after we get to shoot them. Mine just arrived. I assume I'll have to wait 48 hours before I can have it in my grubby paws. Range is too busy on Sunday so probably Monday before I can shoot it.

As a kid back in the 60's I always lusted after the Mannlicher rifles.

The Atlantic Firearms price was a few bucks less than I saw it at. Well, it's too late, I bought another toy instead.

Wow, that’s quite a bargain.

Don’t know when I can get to the range, my transmission went out in my truck and has been sitting in their lot for 3 weeks now.
