Last night my wife picked up a Steyr C9-A1 for $439. This is the 9mm "mid-size" version with the compact (3.6-inch) barrel and full length grip (17+1). She doesn't like short grips that crowd her fingers or leave her pinky free. She wanted something with a bit more manageable recoil than her .40 PX4 Storm Compact, so she was attracted to the 9mm and Steyr's bore axis. This one has the traditional Steyr trapezoidal sights.

We read a lot online about the C specifically and Steyrs in general. Most of it seems favorable, with a reputation for a nice, light trigger pull. So we bought it without ever shooting one. Unfortunately, it will probably be at least a week before we can get to the range. Anybody else have experience with them?

I picked up a Styer M-40 in .40S&W. It is one of the early models. It also has the trapezoid sights. It is a very accurate & seems to be easier to shoot & recover for the next shot. I really like it & it has become my .40S&W carry gun. The improvements made to the newer models are nice. This is a great pistol, that not many seem to know about! I have only met one other person shooting one. And that was a woman at the range who had gotten one for EDC. She liked it, her's was a 9mm. I think your wife will really like her new pistol! :)

I also have an early model Steyr M40 and love it. It did have some issues with failing to go completely into battery resulting in failing to fire on occasion (1 in 30 rounds, perhaps). I believe the loaded chamber indicator had something to do with that.

I ditched the captured flat recoil spring and bought a steel recoil spring guide rod along with a replacement (coil) spring and that resolved the issue.
My M40 has always been a joy to shoot, proving both accurate with less perceived recoil (particularly muzzle flip) than my G23, Springfield XDm 4.5 (in .40S&W) and even my S&W M&P40c. Now, it's completely reliable as well. It seems to be a robust pistol capable of a sustained diet of a punchy load. Mine occasionally accompanies me on hikes, loaded with Underwood 155gr XTPs rated at 1300 FPS, indeed a punchy load that my M40 seems to have tamed.

I bought mine from CDNN several years ago when they were briefly selling for something ridiculous like $299 NIB.

Yep. Own a l9 a c9 and a m40. Also participate on the steyr club site for awhile now.

Best ergos out there. Only bad thing is steyrs tend to toss brass at your head....mags are expensive and go dry in supply from time to time and almost no accessory support.

I'm 6'5 and S9-A1 fits like a glove, even enough space for a pinky, and i'm picky about that too.positive experience only. One FTE due to limpwrist of first time shooter.

In addition to what has been said, the gun is very modular with slides, frames and mags often interchanging.

I've got an M9 with the trap sights. Picked it up for a big $250 from CDNN way back. It was my first semi-auto. I haven't shot it in a while, I need to get it to the range again. I think I was one of the first people to sign up for Steyr Club, but I do not remember my login information and couldn't get in the last time I tried.

I have an early M9 with the trap sights and the inside the trigger guard safety. Great ergonomics and a fantastic grip design that fits my hand like a glove. Only problem was finding more high capacity mags as mine only came with 10 round mags.

I'd be very interested in picking one of these up someday when there's more support and aftermarket accessories.

A friend of mine (also an instructor of firearms and tactics) uses one exclusively and has high praise for it. Although I have not shot it, that sight picture is really something special.

I have a Steyr M9, bought from Cabela's (maybe an exclusive?) a couple years ago, when PW Arms was importing them rather than Steyr America. It was my CCW for roughly a year. Very accurate once you get accustomed to the sights, and the recoil seems practically nonexistent to me. My only complaint is a common one among Steyr owners, concerning extraction/ejection issues. However, I recently contacted Steyr customer service, and they sent me a replacement extractor kit. I just need to hurry up and install it.

Those were the Franken steyrs or also called grey market ones. Newer lowers or frames with the the older slides. Basically mismatched production dates along with design changes. Going by memory only the modern ma1 frame with the older m slide design. Many had good luck with them though.

Took the C9 to the range on Saturday. Wow, what a terrific gun.

Great trigger, comfortable to hold, loved the sights, my wife and I were both as accurate with it as anything similar we've shot. The grip angle and tight bore axis really make a difference in felt recoil. I have chronic tendinitis in my right wrist, so most of my shooting is .22WMR. This is the first 9mm I could have shot all day long; I had zero discomfort.

Glad you & you're wife like that Steyr . That you can use it without discomfort, is fantastic! Any gun that shoots well & is comfortable, is one you will be happy with! Have fun & stay safe.

You all suck. Steyer has been in the radar for me for a few years because a friend kinda wants one. They have intrigued me and I like oddball stuff. Now I'll have to start looking for one again....

I've admired them from afar. The LGS had a used one in .40 for a couple months. The trigger was superb and I liked the feel very much. Eventually it sold...I would've considered picking it up but didn't want another .40.
