I recently acquired very large quantity (about 11 to 12 thousand) of 9mm cast bullets through some trading. Bullets I got are all hard cast 124gr and 147gr truncated point. I would like to load these for use in my Hi-Power or Beretta and would appreciate any favorite recipe you may have using Winchester 231 powder. I'm just looking for accurate plinking loads and not hot loads.

Thanks.

3.8grns WW231 with the 147's works really well in my guns. Should be around 900-950fps or so and will run most guns. And, it won't lead yet is basically a full pressure, standard load.

I've used 3.8-4.7gr with my 124gr FMJ bullets. IMO 231 is not a good powder for 124gr although maybe you might like it with your cast bullets. Even at 4.5gr, it seemed like a light load. 3.8 wouldn't cycle my Sig.

If you are loading for a beretta 92 forget the lead bullets. Read the manual it specifically says no lead bullets. I tried loading lead for my 92 FS and after about 25 rounds the bullets would start to hit the target sideways:what:

When I removed the barrel there were shreds of lead hanging from the lands.

This was with Penn bullets which are very hard high quality bullets.

I'm not sure about other beretta models, but the 92 doesnt shoot lead bullets.

Get jacketed or plated bullets and they will work fine. The Highpower shoots lead fine however.

Master Blaster,

I never heard that about the Beretta 92FS and cast bullets.
We have couple guys who shoot 92FS in our IDPA club and three of those guys use reloads made of cast bullets and they never seem to have any problem. One of the guy is classified as master in SSP and our club's most accurate shooter.

I'm going to follow up with those guys next weekend.

Lead bullets

seem to inspire a lot of mythological misrepresentations. AKA "BS" ;)

They are "complicated" and require some understanding but they are excellent for general shooting and properly designed and alloyed, they are superior for most handgun hunting applications.

One product that I've used for many years now that helps to make cast bullets more forgiving of 'improper' use is Lee Liquid Alox lube. This is applied by "tumbling" the bullets in a plastic container with the lube. It is a little "sticky" after it dries, but it prevents leading. It also produces a bit of smoke when shooting.

I have had excellent success with W231 and lead bullets in the 9MM, although I have switched to plated lately.

I've shoot plenty of 9mm lead through my 92FS.

I went to berettaforum.net before I bought my original batch of cast lead. After getting positive info from quite a few competition shooters, I decided to try cast in my 92. I've had no problems and I clean the barrel after every trip to the range.

Glad this topic came up. I have 4lbs of Win 231 and 2k of hard cast from Weidners on the way.

And yes I am shooting them in my Glock.
