I need some help. I got over 38,000 pcs of 9mm cast bullets

Long story but I have a friend who owed me some money so we did some trading this weekend and I ended up with over 15,000 pcs of 9mm 124gr flat nose cast bullets and over 23,000 pcs of 9mm 147gr flat nose cast bullets. I also got over 17 pounds of Winchester 231 powder in the deal... and about 7,000 Winchester primers

I never loaded cast bullets in 9mm and need some suggestions for plinking loads using Winchester 231 powder to shoot in my Hi-Power, 1911 and Beretta. I'm not looking for hot loads, just something accurate with adquate velocity to be reliable in my pistols. Let me know what has worked for you.

I think this will last me for many years of shooting.

You will want to keep the velocity low when shooting lead bullets.

Yeah, I got about 12,000 pcs couple months back from same guy and I haven't had a chance to load any of those yet. All together I have about 55,000 pcs of 9mm cast bullets of various weight and shape.

I don't see having that many bullets as a problem. If you don't have the Lyman Pistol & Revolver Manual, 3rd edition, now would be a good time to invest in it. There are many, many loads for cast bullets in there, along with suggested "most accurate" loads. That would be a good place to start.

High-cap automatic ammo? Er...now that's stretching things in the evil description game. Maybe he had a lot to fire from his 10round mags. I never knew a cartridge that was high-cap (two bullets in one case?) and automatic (seems like a danger. A cartridge that goes off automaticly.)

Geez, if theirs 7000 grains in a pound...then 23,000 147gr bullets is about 483 lbs, 15000 124gr is about 265 lbs.

So, if my math is right, you inherited 700 lbs of lead from a fella to handle a private debt? That's...uh, about $1400 worth of raw material if he bought it or a TREMENDOUS amount of time if he made his own from scrap lead.

Primers are about 2 cents a piece, so 7000 would be about $140 worth.

The powder at about $15 a pound = $255... so a total of about $1795 street value? Wow. Not to mention that 17 lbs of powder at 4 gr each bullet is enough to make 29,750 bullets. That's a lot of shooting.... hope you've got a good source for brass too.

The guy I got it from has some professional casting machines at his storage bay. He was going to cast bullets for business but never got around to doing it. These bullets were cast two or three years ago when he was shooting a lot. I think he still have some put away for his own use.

I did him a big favor by doing some wiring work for his building on weekends. I figured he would have to pay about $2,000 - $2,500 for the job if he called a contractor. I spent some of my own money for cables, outlets, etc. for the job but mostly it was my knowledge and labor. I think I did okay.

Its a lot of bullets. About 120 boxes of them on two pallets. And I have 4 full plastic 5 gal. pickle barrels full of 9mm brass from the local LEO range that I been picking up for past year or two. I'm all set to go.

Now, I was thinking of loading 124 gr bullets with 4.1 gr of Winchester 231 and 147gr bullets with 3.8 gr. of same powder. Does that sound about right place to start?

One thing you might TRY, is loading some of these pills up in .38 special cases and see how they shoot. Back when CAS got going big time, but before there were a lot of truncated cone or flat-point bullets that were NOT SWC, I loaded some of the 9mm 124gr TC bullets for the game. That did okay, but not great. Plenty accurate enough for the short-range, big target game. Not so much as you'd want to go squirrel hunting with 'em. You might have some luck, if you like .38Spl plinking.

I thank you for all your offers but I'm going to keep these bullets as I have my father, three brothers, two sons and a wife who shoot 9mm pistols almost exclusively. I don't normally shoot 9mm but I recently acquired a CZ-75 and a Kimber 1911 in 9mm so I'll be shooting it up too. Once I figure out two loads that will work in all our 9mm pistols I'm going to be loading them up in my 650. I don't think these bullets will last as long as you guy think... maybe two years.

I shoot lots of 147's with 3.8grns of 231 under them. Excellent load, you will like! About full power and will run any gun but not fast enough to lead the barrel.
