IMO it beats the 375 H&H as an everywhere, everything round. I like the 5-down, lighter rifles, and slightly milder recoil, and the old Otto Bock 9,3 is inherently accurate with about anything it's fed.

It is one of my favorite cartridges. With modern bullets/powders it is far more versatile than most people think. I don't have a .375, but if I need bigger than my 9.3, it will be bigger than .40.

I use the 9.3x74R, same bullet at about the same velocity...

Chapuis? Beautiful DR you have!

I killed a cape buffalo with a Valmet 412 BBF, a 12ga over 9,3X74R. It is virtually identical ballistically to the X62. I loaded down slightly from the X62 velocities in break open guns. The buffalo didn't know that, however. ;)

I took a two barrel set to Masailand, the BBF 12/9,3X74R and O/U 9,3X74R, both scoped with the Valmet QD base.

This is my very plain Husqvarna FN 98 commercial action 9,3X62. I've had and sold six others along the way, as finances dictated (I'm not wealthy, not even close). All were one-holers. I love the FN 98 action and rifles on it, and the Husqvarna is trim and light weight.

Not eye candy at all...

Here is a 9.3X62 bough at the Mannlicher plant and sighted in at their range. Later used for driven game hunt in Eastern Austria. The boar was the largest of eight taken with the 9.3X62 on that hunt.

Valmet's are pretty nice guns, good job with taking a buffalo with one... I have one of the very first 412's to come into the US, I've fired it many thousands of times, as it was my test bed. It has never failed to fire or function in any way.

There's a very long story of how the first two 412's chambered in 9.3x74R came to the USA, but I'm going to tell you a short version of it.

I was friends with the head of Valmet USA (Robert Sheriden) and he never heard of a 9,3x74R until I tried to get him to bring in a couple DR bbl. sets for me but said he couldn't because they weren't on his import license. When he mentioned that he was going on a business trip to the Valmet factory, I talked him into putting two DR sets into his personal luggage and bringing them back to the US that way. lol

After getting them, I was bugging him to put them on his license and he said he'd have to have at least 10 sets sold before he'd even consider it, so I told him I'd take 20 sets. All of this took a very long time, as there was no email or internet back in those days.

And that's how the 9.3x74R's got started coming to the US.

I shot the dickens out of that first set, and I still have it, but that's another story!

BTW, I sold those 20 DR sets fast by advertising them in Shotgun News...

I bet I bough at least one of those sets.

I also bought all Numrich had when they closed them out and got some from Jeff Mayfield and Don Schrum (spelling?) at Cape Outfitters. I bought Jeff and Numrich out of their scope mounts.

I always wondered how the Germans settled on 9.3mm as their standard medium-large calibre when they could have had 9.5mm which comes out to .375" in normal practice.

I'm a fan of the 9.3 and the 375s. My 09 Argentine mauser build is in limbo, that will be a 9.3x62 and will be my brush gun. One of these days I'll order the barrel, not sure what stock I'll do yet.
That 09 Argentine is the slickest 98 style action ever built, IMO. It's amazing, and they have hinged floorplates.

Here's one of the very first 412's to come to the US with the very first 9.3x74R bbl. set to make it to the US, on it,

The cartridges are (top) a 74R loaded with a 286NP, and bottom is the 74R "improved", loaded with the same 286 NP.

That's why I'm using it, my other 09 7x57Ai will pare well with the 9.3x62. Picked this one up for $300 that was cut and reamed to7.65-06 so it's a good Donner for a 9.3x62.
7X57AI...Man after my own heart! I have a Husky 1640 that was re-chambered to 7X57AI. It's my antelope rifle. I got it in a pawn shop in Fernley NV years ago for $200.00 OTD. The store owner was a friend and said nobody wanted it; it had been there two years. I know he still made $150.00 on it. It came with a very purple 3-9 Leupold in Redfield JR mounts. That got changed to a Burris FFII.

It's the rifle on top. The tiny bolt stop pin gives it away that it's the Husky action. The bottom is my 9.3X62 again.

Yes but have yet to sample one. I wanted one of the Ruger #1's in 9.3x74R when they were announced and then in .450/.400 but ended up with neither. Last year a used Ruger Hawkeye African in 9.3x62 showed up at the local shop on consignment but they wanted way too much for it.

Here's my 7x57ai 09, it's a pretty special gun to me. It was mostly built by John van Patten dad was friends with him he lived across the river in Milford P.a. John was a old gunsmith who happened to work with p.o.ackley at the collage, he was a tool and die maker and made most of the reamers for Ackley along with other things.

Around 2003ish dad had him build this rifle for me, we picked it up early he still needed to finish the stock and checkering and blue it. John died not long after we picked up the rifle so it's his last gun he built. When we first dropped of the 09 we went over cartridges, I knew I wanted 7x57 then John came up with the first reamer Ackley had made in 7x57ai and I couldn't resist. John was well known for boring barrels to, the year before he built me a 1903 Springfield bored to 358 Norma mag for a elk hunt that never happened. Wish I still had that rifle.

I figured the 9.3x62 will match well with the 7x57ai, I may do a similar stock as the ai but I'd like to maybe do

This is a cool thread! I started my 9.3x62 build last year. I sent an already sporterized 1903 A3 Smith Corona to J.E.S Reboring and had it back in a month or two. I still need to get a few things done to it before I take it out to the range. My thought was if I ever made it to Africa, I could use it as both a plains and DG rifle.

You guys with the 7x57 Ackley Improved rifles are really intriguing me. I almost bought one on GB earlier this year but passed it up for something else. I have a 7x57 rifle already (my very first bolt-action rifle I built/rebuilt when I was 14 years old). I am a handloader and would love to find a nice 7x57 AI already built (tastefully) to add to my stable one day.

That makes my tongue hard. Barrel band sling stud, three position safety, knock out wood...Trade you... ;)

A suggestion:

Take the one 9.3X62 with two scopes in good QD mounts. Sight one in for 250gr premium bullets that zing out a bit; you don't need to hot rod them, however. 200 yards is good. I like a 2-7 or 2.5-8. I used an older 2-7 VariX II on a 416 Rigby for years. I loaded it with the lighter 350gr Speers and shot coyotes with it.

Sight in the other for a premium 286gr safari type bullet and use something like an older (11-12 years older or so) 1-4 Leupold for the DG hunt. I don't trust any Leupolds newer that that. 100 yards is good.
