I am thinking of buying a 1911 gun that has the commander length slide with an officer's grip. Are there any in production, beside Les Baer Stingers?

Thanks,
Ric

Kimber has an officers/4". Sig is making an officers/4.25" and Colt has an officers/4.25".

There may be more but those 3 I'm sure of.

There were quite a few manufacturers making such guns a few years back. But they weren't as popular as you'd expect them to be. Colt used to sell a model called the C.C.O., which was a true Commander upper on an Officer's lower. I've got an older Springflield Compact, which is a 4" upper on an Officer's lower (so, it's a 1/4 of an inch shorter than a "true" Commander upper). Here are a couple of pics:

For me, it's the perfect package. When carrying IWB (as most people do), you get all the concealability of an Officer's ACP plus the accuracy, reliability, and shootability of the Commander. In my book, this is the perfect carry gun.

Accurate, too! Here's an example of a 15 rounds at 15 yards group (185gr JSWC CCI Blazer):

This is a totally stock pistol that I purchased for under $400. Not bad, huh?

Detonics USA for one, makes one.
I'm pretty sure the Detonics frame is shorter than an actual Officer's ACP. I seem to remember that 6-round Officer's mags are too large. It's the same story with the old STI Ranger.

Man, I must be nuts. I am seriously considering a Les Baer Stinger. I have never spent that much money on a pistol before. I wonder if it would be worth it.

I think you'r right, but if someone want's a short butt... well... get a short one. I presume that concealability is the main issue here. :)

This is another Commander length, 8 round option that has a concealable grip:

Dan Wesson Commander Classic Bobtail (available in .45 and 10mm)

The Nighthawk Custom Talon III is a commander slide, officers grip style pistol also. However I think it might cost a bit more than the Baer.

the kimber models and colt CCO have aluminum frames dont they?

it sucks Spring discontinued the compact models...

In addition to the Bobtail model pictured above, Dan Wesson also manufactured a true CCO. (Commander slide, Officer's frame.) They are not a current production model, but they show up occasionally on the auction sites. The majority were in 45acp, with a very, very small number being 10mm. I currently use one in 10mm as my primary CCW.

Take a look at Wilson Combat

Wilson Combat makes a couple of 1911s that are Commander length slides on an Officer's size lower - the CQB Compact and the SDS (Stealth Defensive System) which is rather salty pricewise.

My friend who is very, very picky about his 45's just got one of those Detonics USA ones (the new design) and is very, very happy with it. It is now his primary carry peice.
