Interesting that it has the bayonet. The question is, does the bayonet mount on the rifle? All the ones I have seen have had the bayo lugs Vincent Van Gogh'ed.

can a left handed shooter use it or is the scope off to the side like on Garand snipers?

Scope's off to the side and the cheekpiece is really damn painful. It sucks for lefties.

I spent a lotta money for a synthetic stockset, and I've gotta get around to getting a centerline mounted scope sometime. At least it works okayish for now.

But in the end it seemed little more than an elongated AK.

Yes the PSL is a kalashnikov pattern design, though if you want to get technical it is based on the RPK (Ruchnoy Pulemjot Kalashnikova) not the AK (Avtomat Kalashnikova). The RPK is the light machinegun/squad automatic weapon (SAW) variant of the stamped receiver AK, the AKM. The RPK has a thicker receiver that has an even stronger front trunnion/receiver connection, and a heavier and longer barrel, than the AKM. This is probably why the Romanians chose it as a the starting point for a designated marksman rifle over the AKM.

What else shoots the 7.62x54R?

Excluding the various belt-fed machineguns that fire the 7.62x54R and limiting this to just rifles, other than the PSL the ones I know of are the Mosin-Nagant M1891, the Tokarev SVT-38/40, the Russian made Dragunov types (SVD and Tigr), Chinese made copies of the Dragunov (Type-79/85 & NDM-86), and the Iraqi Al Kadesiah (which also looks like a Dragunov copy, but reportedly uses a stamped receiver and has no parts that interchange with a Dragunov).

There are a lot of claims that the PSL is significantly inferior in accuracy to the SVD, but every credible source (i.e. people who have shot both) I've heard about state that the PSL is at least very close to the SVD accuracy-wise. Dragunov.net has an piece written by a Finnish army sniper who has shot both SVDs and PSLs, and he says their accuracy is equal. This piece is at:
http://www.dragunov.net/finn.html

I've also heard some militaries who use eastern-block weapons prefer the PSL to the SVD as their as their designated marksman rifle, since it is less expensive and requires no additional training on field-stripping and cleaning, to troops who are already familiar with AK/AKM type rifles.

man. i never have money when i really need it... im bumbed... but soon, very soon i will have one..muhahahahahahaha...

also... is there anything that can be done to further accurize this type of rifle?? like litening the trigger pull, changing trigger to more match grade trigger, repplaceing barrel.... just wondering. when i do get one, i will most likily shoot factory, surpluse and handloads. i am guessing that handloads is going to be the best way to try and squeeze accuracy out of it, i was just wondering if anything else can be done to them.

The most complete list that I can think of, regarding 7.62x54r rifles.

Mosin-Nagant - all models as originally built
SVD
PSL
Type-79/85
NDM-86
Al Kadesiah
AVS-36 (Simonov)
SVT-38/40 (Tokarev)
Winchester 1895
EAA imported Baikal over/under double rifle
MGS made Degtyarev DP28

Of these, the Iraqi rifle is not available in the US, and I'm pretty sure the Type 79 is not available. Otherwise, most of these are readily available here. The Degtyarev, PSL, and Mosins are available through distributors, while SVT-40's are easily acquired on the auction sites at any given time.

Dragunov.net used to sell them, I dunno if they're still available. Quality's kinda crappy, and it cost me $150 for the set, but if they're not available anymore (like I think is the case) I'm glad I got it.

I don't like the look of the PSL buttstock. I would be happy to buy one if they offered a model with the traditional, straight-lined buttstock.

Is it possible to get non-corrosive 7.62x54r to use in these rifles?

Cleaning corrosive ammo used in a 91-30 is easy, not sure about a semi auto though.

It's actually even easier to clean a PSL than a Mosin Nagant. The barrel is chrome lined and cleans up really easy. I don't usually even bother using water or windex on it. I've put around 700 rounds through it so far and no problems with rust yet.

If my Mosin Nagants don't get the water treatment they start to rust.

I have a very limited experience with these rifles, but I think they are the most uncomforatable guns that exist.

But if you want a fun, accurate enough, cheap to shoot gun a PSL sounds like a winner.

fudd,

What about the gas tube? Don't the corrosive salts get in there and cause problems?

The tube hasn't been a problem. I just clean it out as normal. The one thing I'm worried about is the gas vent itself. I've flushed it out with water before, and I try to spray some CLP down there with each cleaning, but...
