Anybody else out there a DC resident? If so, have you purchased any firearms? I have been down to the registration office, got my paperwork, gave my hand prints, etc. I'm guessing that many area firearms dealers do not want the hassle of dealing with the DC registration process, but, after being turned down at the first shop I visited (Virginia Arms), I'm wondering if there are any shops at all that deal with DC residents?

And hold off on your "move to Virginia" comments; that may be coming for me, but for now I'm in DC.

Even if you don't have any information, I would be interested in hearing from DC residents. I'm pondering a blog to discuss gun issues in DC, which will be getting interesting here in a few weeks when the decision in the Heller case comes down, and I would like to get an idea of how many DC residents support Second Amendment rights.

You know you can only buy a long arm, right??? Try the Trophy Room in Alexandria. I know a bunch of folks in DC who picked up guns there.

Actually, a buddy just won a shotgun last week. I;ll ask him where they are transferring it to him through.

You might also check out the Pawn shop in Arlington. They are pretty on the ball and should be able to give you a heads up on how to do it.

Big Bore:

I am a DC resident and I presently own two shotguns with two more on order. I didn't have any problem with MPD. The idea of a separate blog on DC is a good one and I'd be happy to participate.

Let me know how I can help.

I will be starting an internship with the DoD next month, in DC. I found an apartment for rent on the VA side, so I am bringing some of my irons with me. Let me know if you wanna go shooting sometime.

I live in NOVA. If you want to buy them for me I'll let you use them any time you want! :)

(Just kidding)

I understand residents of DC and all federal enclaves may purchase long arms and handguns from any state. Any lawyers want to chime in with studied opinions?
This is not to hijack the thread. If you do not have related info to respond with please ignore this post.

Big Bore,

WOW, you ARE the rare bird aren't you?

A legal bona fide DC gunowner. Incredible. How do you stand it?

I live in Alexandria. Let me know if you want to go to the range and shoot a handgun or more. The offer is open anytime, just let me know. You can also bring your shotguns if you like. The range I am talking about is Gilberts down in Lorton.

I couldn't stand to live in DC, it's bad enough that I work there, but that's where the paycheck comes from.

txgho1911,

No DC residents can own a handgun unless they were registered prior to 1976.

What does it take to legally own a rifle or shotgun in DC?

" Try the Trophy Room in Alexandria. I know a bunch of folks in DC who picked up guns there. "

The trophy room is no more. They closed and are only doing police/wholesale as far as I know.

Countertop, thanks for the tip on the Violence Policy Center, I'll be heading right over there...

Moo 2 Drvr, who is doing your transfer for the two shotguns on order?

In DC, handguns are essentially banned. As for long arms, you can own a shotgun or rifle, so long as it does not have a detachable magazine or a magazine capacity over 10 rounds (or 12 rounds, depending on who you're talking to), and a few other limits. The registration process includes some paperwork, finger printing for a background check, and fees. The registration office must approve the purchase before you take ownership of the gun.

I"d currently attending school and living in D.C., but I leave my guns at home in Kansas City. Wouldn't want to get into any trouble, now would I? ;)

I purchased the shotguns from Pacific Sporting Arm in California and am having them transfered to Atlantic Guns in Silver Spring. I try to support the local gun shops. I purchased another shotgun from the Atlantic store in Rockville a few months ago. I also purchased one from PG Trap and Skeet. No problems so far. I try to get PG Trap and Skeet several times each week.

Never ran into the problem you ran into in Va. Love the Commonwealth. Have been here in DC proper for 20 years but will be moving back to Old Town Alexandria in a few years.

What are your interests?

Moo 2 Drvr,

I'm looking to buy a Garand. I've chatted with the people at the registration office about it, and they are a bit confused by the en bloc clip, but they have twice told me it will be legal.

I also want to get a Marlin 1895, just for fun.

Finally, I am assuming that Heller will strike down the handgun ban, and I'm pondering how us DC folks will purchase handguns when the happens.

D.C., NYC and all of NY including UPstate New York people...

THIS is a very interesting thread and I would like to learn more about the D.C. residents. Thank you!

I would like to know more about UPSTATE NY firearm laws too. Yes, I know that they have links that give information along with certain procedures on government and gun carry websites but I would like to HEAR and READ more from D.C. and ALL NY, including upstate NY people here.

Thank you!

Sincerely,

Catherine

Big Bore:

Sounds great about the Garand! Let me know how it goes.

Thought I'd share a recent learning experience. Yesterday I went to Atlantic Guns (local FFL in Silver Spring - good guys) to pickup one of the new shotguns that I purchased from Pacific Sporting Arms in California. I got the gun home, an expensive Perazzi, and discovered it was damaged. Arrrrgh.:cuss: The salesman acknowledged he didn't inspect it before he shipped it and it appeared to be damaged in customizing the stock for me.

Note to self. Check every firearm you purchase very carefully before you take delivery. Don't let the bubble wrap lull you into a false sense of security.

Fortunately, I purchased it with a credit card and Pacific Sporting hasn't given me a hard time, but it would have been better if I had checked it over before I went to the trouble to register it only to have to de-register it with DC. :banghead:

I hope you can learn from my experience.

Thanks Moo 2 Drvr, I'll keep that experience in mind. And thanks for telling me about Atlantic Guns-that is the primary reason I started this thread to begin with--to find a shop that would sell to DC residents. It does not look like there are that many others here, though.
