<RANT>So, this guy complied with the robbers and was shot anyway. I just don't see a reason to not carry a gun if you are in a permissive state like Florida and have a job like a pizza deliveryman. Especially in Miami! The only reason I can think of is that management disapproves. I guess if he had a 100K job that was not easily replacable, he would be concerned. But should a pizza deliveryman be worried about being canned? He can get another job in a day. I don't get it. I think people believe in karma and think that if they don't arm themselves, then they won't be a victim of armed violence. What a crock of crapola that is.</RANT>

Pizza deliverer robbed, shot in the leg

The potential perils of delivering pizza became evident Tuesday night when a delivery person was robbed and shot.

The victim arrived at a home at 1281 NW 202nd St. in North Miami-Dade about 9 p.m. when he discovered the dwelling was abandoned.

Out of the darkness, he was pounced upon by three men, at least one of them armed. They ordered him to surrender the pie and all the money he was carrying. He did, only to be shot in the leg by one of the robbers, all of whom fled.

The victim was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

Anyone with information on the crime is urged to call Crimestoppers at 305-471-8477.

I suspect many people either are not familiar with firearms, dont want to go through the trouble to get one (handgun or permit), or don't think they will be a victim.
Stories like this enforce the beliefs of those that do carry, and help me push harder for us MDers who can't.
I suspect if he had even a slight interest in firearms before, he probably is carrying now. I am not sure if any range/gunshops offer this service, but I think low/no cost CC information seminars would help pull in fence sitters, who are not ready for a full blown live fire qualifying class, maybe something as simple as a video on loop in the store's window, or linked on youtube.

ex. start with a re-enactment of a crime, then show some statistics of armed/disarmed victims, show some choices in CC firearms, holsters, and basic safety instruction, and what obtaining a licence entails. End with a reenacted re-enactment where the would be victims actions are broken down step by step, and you have something people like this delivery guy can look to for some advice.

IANAL, but I would also suspect that company policies as well as liability issues would come into play.

I thought I had addressed this. Let's roleplay. We are pizza deliverymen, in Miami. Boss tells us not to carry. Do we care? I will be honest. I don't care. Fire me. I can always get another minimum wage job, and my life is not a fair price for a minimum wage job. I figure I am not going to get caught unless I am forced to use the gun. In that case, a lost job is worth the price.

Liability? For the business, possibly. For the pizza deliveryman, who actually makes this decision, not so much. :neener:

So, when something like this happens, and the victim is fortunate enough to survive, who pays for the medical bills, rehab, any necessary counseling? Are they covered by workman’s comp, or some company insurance plan, or are they on their own?

Sure, the reason is that compan policy will specifically forbid it. However, pizza delivery ain't exactly a career, I'd risk it (the job, as opposed to my life).;)

I served subpoenas for the local Sheriff's Office as an intern in college. Marked car and everything and I worked alone. Had a permit, my supervisor asked the Sheriff if I culd carry since I was taking the same risks as any Civil Division deputy...he said "no", so I didn't. Had it been a regular job like Pizza delivery I would have. Not gonna disobey the Sheriff though.:)

It won't be long until pizza delivery folks (let's call them Deliverators) will be armed with katanas, driving super-efficient cars in a post-apocolyptic future.

Oh, wait, that's Snow Crash. My mistake. :D

On topic - if I were to work a job that prohibited concealed carry, I would find another job. In some states it is a felony to carry in defiance of a workplace policy against it.

PTK, thank you for pointing out Snow Crash. As a fan of Gibson, I am surprised I have not heard of Neal Stephenson before, other than walking past his books at the bookstore. I am going to be buying a copy of this tonight.

Doesn't that only apply when you're in the actual workplace (the building)??

Or does the pizza-delivery-mobile count as an extension of the workplace? What about if the robbery occurs outside the car?

I have two jobs, one of which is a teacher, and the other isnt.

At the non-teaching job, I didnt bother to ask what the workplace policy is, and nobody bothered to tell me. I like to follow a policy of better to beg forgiveness than ask permission.
