Any speculation as to the super secret new Ruger gun?

I don't think it is necessarily such a bad deal. If the MSRP is $1995, then the selling price will probably be closer to $1500. As I recall, most gas piston AR's are about $300-400 more expensive than their normal AR counterparts. The rails also add to the price, and it appears to have flip down BUIS already installed. So I think it may be a better deal than most people are thinking when you look at the add ons included.

Intriguing.

It looks like the piston is more robust than some competing designs. Troy rail and BUIS, not cheesy no-name stuff.

4-position gas regulator. Do other piston AR's offer an adjustable gas system?

Nice rifle. I'd certainly like to have one.

I hope it's ok to ask here, but what's the typical use of this rifle?

Don't misunderstand...this is NOT a "gun control" question, so for those of you who want it "just because," then that's fine by me. I've been curious, and the intro of this new weapon prompts the question, why folks would buy this or a similar rifle.

I have shot an AR-15. It was kinda fun, but still seems pretty expensive for a home defense weapon, which is the only practical application that I can see.

So, with all that in mind, what IS the purpose?

Maybe I'm just missing the "cool gun" gene??

The main purpose of these weapons is training.
Second purpose is recreation.
Third is self defense preparedness.
Fourth is hunting.
Fifth is "something nice to own".
Sixth is self defense,

Training because these are relatively complicated machines and you can't expect to just pick one up in an emergency and use it correctly. It's no different than buying first aid gear and practicing with it...well, it is because rifles are more fun, but same principle.

Recreation speaks for itself.

Self defense...I said preparedness because frankly very few are actually used for self defense. Actual self defense is lower on the list.

Hunting...these are well designed for hunting and are limited mainly by their low power. If this is really an AR platform it should accept a non-ruger upper receiver more suitable for large game, but even 5.56 is usable for the smaller end of the large game family.

Something nice to own...who doesn't want nice things?

I agree with Ed, I am hoping once it catches on, they will offer it in other calibers.

?!?

Opposite here. I see thousands of practical uses EXCEPT home defense, unless......

1) Your children sleep in concrete pill-boxes.
2) Your neighbors live in brick houses without windows.
3) Burglars in your area have a tendency to wear body armor.
4) Your livingroom is larger than a football field and you expect to confront
aforementioned burglars at 100 yards.

I'll stick to my tactical 12 gauge for HD and use my AR for plinking, target shooting, deer hunting in the deep woods, and as a general truck gun.
