A few years ago I ordered in a new Steyr M40-A1. I really liked the pistol, it's just that I've never been a fan of the 10mm Kurz. So, I re-homed it. Problem was, by the time I got around to ordering a replacement in 9mm, they were apparently no longer being imported and were nigh impossible to find. I told myself if I ever found one whilst running around to my various watering holes I'd pick it up and take her home. That was about three years ago. I hadn't seen one until today...

I snuck out of the office for my occasional pilgrimage to Cabelas, about 50 miles away. After getting the various items on my list I stopped by the pistol cases, and low and behold, right there in the first case was a lonely M9-A1 for $399. I immediately spoke up for her. :)

Despite an obvious fair amount of handling, once detail stripped, it appears she's barely been shot. :)

I guess I'll be trying my hand at stippling the grip portion of the frame. I'm not exactly sure why, but I simply can't stomach the though of a pistol with the word "Mannlicher" proudly displayed on the side. :)

Anyone do any custom work on their M9? I'd forgotten how funky the trapezoid sights look. I suppose I can get used to them again, otherwise I'll me making a set of plain black sights. Looks like some sort of grip gap filler would be nice too, and maybe a real metal (probably aluminum) guide rod in stead of this plastic thing.

Matt,
I couldn't stand the sights on my Steyr, so I shipped the slide off to Trijicon and they installed their Steyr M9A1-specific night sights on the slide. It's a target pistol now for me - just love the Trijicon sights. Great pistol.

Thanks adobe, I found the Club Friday and signed up. Hadn't checked the downloads section yet, though.

I hope to get around to turning a guide rod in the next week or two.

Matt, one of the guys on the Steyr Club (BigTaco) makes steel guide rods (among other goodies), so you might just order one of his instead of making your own.

Thanks, Zund, but where would the fun be in that?

I need to make one for my Colt Government .380 any way. :)

Is there really an issue with the plastic guide rod?

My thoughts exactly.

Plastic guide rods are really not a bid deal since there is no direct stresses on it.

But still, boys and their toys.....

I have a perfectly functional bedside table right now that I am in the process of replacing with something I am making.

Just sayin....

I do like the Steyr M9s and S9s quite a bit and I would not be sad if every Glock on the planet were replaced with them.

The problem with a plastic guide rod is that A. it's ugly (less so on a plastic gun), and B. it just LOOKS like it's going to fail. :)

Plus, it looks like something I can actually handle making. :)

I made a stainless steel guide rod for my CZ 75 SP-01 and low and behold I got the dimensions right but it still wouldn't go in. Apparently it was plastic on purpose because the one piece guide rod required a little bit of flex to install.
Sometimes they are plastic for a reason other than saving money.
I think you should make it though. I lost a sling button for one of my military mauser slings. I just made a new set. Which I am very proud to use on my rifle sling because I made it.

Well, I whipped one out tonight. It was even pretty before I started trying to get the darned spring back on it. Talk about an exercise in frustration! I can see already that I'm going to have to end up making a two piece job.

Seems to fit and function, though.
