I am going to buy a new 20 gauge for hog hunting because I don't really like the hammering I take shooting 12 guage. My question is, whats the advantage to a rifled barrel verses a smooth bore and what type slug would be best to use for hunting hog?

Rifled barrels shooting sabots are more accurate than smoothbores. Under 60-70 yards not much difference. Beyond this sabots can extend your range another 60 yards or so. Be sure to try different types of slugs to find the best shooter in you gun. Practice to find your maximum ethical range for hogs.

How many shots a day are you taking at hogs? Just wondering....must be a heck of a lot if the 12 gauge is as tough as you indicated. FWIW, they do make reduced velocity 12 gauge slugs. Have you given them a try? They are a lot cheaper than a new shotgun....unless you just want an excuse to get a new shotgun. ;)
