For over a year I've been on the lookout for a Black CZ P-01, with an Omega Trigger. Seems my gun shop never has one, and I've been looking on Buds it's always out of stock. I've seen it on gunbroker twice but one was used (I want new) and another looked sketchy from a seller with no feedback.

Any general advice on how to go about buying a hard to find gun that won't cost me an arm and a leg?

Patience is a virtue. Waiting is really the only way. Often times, distributors have only a small quantity of guns trickle in from manufacturers. Wait for production to catch up to demand.

1. Special Order
2. Put your name on a waiting list. Buds and Hinterland Outfitters both carry them

Call CZ-USA and ask them to do a search. Many, many years ago I called Ruger looking for a hard to find and Bill Ruger actually answered the phone. Had a great conversation and was called back within a couple of hours with phone numbers for 2 stores that had one in stock.

You can always go on different Gun sites that have WTB forums and post there. Also Armslist might be a way to find one

In this particular case I would upgrade to a Sphinx pistol imported by KRISS USA.

Based on your description, it looks like you are talking about this pistol:

At the web page, I linked to in the image citation, I find this SKU number 91229. The next thing I do is head to gun.deals and search on that number. That takes me to this page where it shows what you have already found, that it isn't in stock.

That being said, I would recommend clicking on that link now and again as it is linked to a search, not to a static page. Sorry I was no better help.

I had a similar problem last year in trying to find a Ruger Convertible in .45 Colt/.45ACP. I called practically every gun dealer in N. C. without success. I called Ruger and was told the revolver was in production and that they were shipping every day but didn't believe that since the biggest gun dealers in N.C. couldn't put their hands on one. I started searching the internet and found a dealer in South Dakota named Kones Korner that had one in stock and shortly after that it was in my hands. My advice is to keep searching as it's out there somewhere!

I'm going to go against the grain.

If you really want the gun, shop around at your local gun stores until you find a store that can order one for you. It sounds fairly scarce, so when you do find that special FFL who can grant your wish, I doubt you will have much bargaining power in terms of getting a great deal.

If you're not really all that serious about getting your hands on one, you can wait around and just keep looking where you have been. I've missed out on more than one or two guns over the years by taking that approach.

I found my 625JM in Utah via the internet. I had looked for over a year for a local one to no avail. Sometimes you take what’s available. I was not disappointed.

Ask your dealer if they can order one, even if it means being on a waiting list. I am surprised that no one above suggested asking your dealer to order.

Get the Gunbroker app on your phone. Check twice a day and be patient. when one shows up in the search, bid aggressively and don't skimp.

I would contact one of the larger CZ dealers to see what the deal is. They probably make/import these in runs and just might have to wait until the next batch comes in

I’ve had to wait 2 or 3 years to get a certain gun that I new was in production.
The time gives me a chance to do more research on that firearm and ammo. After further research on a couple of wants
I have changed my mind and saved my money.
There are a lot of great guns out there the best are worth the time it takes.

In the past I've contacted the MFG and asked them which distributors had received shipments and when. Then it was a question of making a couple calls to track one down.

As some of the other guys pointed out, if it's a limited run, you may have to get on a waiting list.

Just curious, why does it have to be new? Lots of folks out there who buy guns and rarely or never use them and then sell them later. There are several black P-01 Omegas on Armslist right now. Great choice, BTW. I love mine.

I am going to throw something in that you might not want to hear.

Sometimes the pursuit is better than the conquest. It could be that you desire something so much that when you finally obtain it you are disappointed. Most of us wouldn't want to be married to the head cheerleader.
