Any unhappy Ruger American owners?

I bought a ranch in 5.56, with a threaded barrel. Shot it doing ladder test with 55 gr. bullets, not impressed with accuracy yet. got more loaded and ready to test in 64 gr. 68 gr. 75 gr and 80 gr. The 75 and 80 gr won't go in the magazine, but I will test anyway.

Count me as unimpressed with an American Ranch Rifle in 300 blackout. Best groups I could get were 2.5" at 100 yards. I tried different bullets, powders, and charges. Just wouldn't do any better so I ended up selling it.

I have several, 30-06, .243, .270, .223, 17hmr, 22wmr, 22lr

All great rifles, all are accurate. No mag issues with any of them like some have had.

Thanx for the input all. I went ahead and pulled the trigger. Will have it Tuesday. Going vortex on the scope. Was looking at the crossfire, but for about $30 more I can get adiamondback

The Ruger American is much like the original VW bug. Cheap, mediocre quality but is the every man's gun and gets the job done. Not much to criticize and not much to praise other than the value for the buck.

I like them and may buy one one day.

For what it's worth, the times I have handled one (never actually shot one) I liked it slightly better than the Savage Axis II, which ain't no slouch. I intend to get one someday, maybe in .223.

You did well getting the Diamondback. The ONLY thing I don't love about them is they are on the heavy side.

My buddy has one in 6.8 Creedmore that is a great shooter although a bare bones rifle it works just fine. I have a compact .22 that is as accurate as any .22 around even screwed a suppressor on the end and it still printed like it was a target rifle. Cheap and accurate what's not to like?

This pic is from a couple weeks ago. A buddy and I were hitting an 8" plate at 580 yards from the truck bed. So yeah, it’s a good gun. However it has its flaws and limitations. I had to sand the fore end down so the barrel would actually free float. Even with that if I really lean into it my shot placement is gone. I'm thinking about bedding it. The adjustable trigger is probably good enough for your average hunter. I myself cut the trigger spring down to get her to under 3lbs. It's still not as smooth as a good polished trigger.

The magazine is crap. It’s difficult to fill. It doesn't want to go into the gun with the slightest amount of dirt. And I found if I grip the gun by the magazine well while working the bolt, it jams up. Though unlike others I am able to load 4 rounds.

There’s almost no aftermarket support for it. I believe you can buy new barrels for the savage axis, but not for this bad boy. Of course a new gun cost little more than an aftermarket barrel. And finally as a point of personal preference, it’s too light for me. At 8lbs after scope and sling, 180gr 30-06 loads will give you over 20ft/lbs of recoil. I fixed this by filling the stock with sand and adding some lead shot to the foregrip.

Despite these failings I never get over shooting cloverleaf groups at 100 yards from prone with a $350 rifle. This weekend I’ll be taking it out to 800 yards.
