Sounds like the Colonial Militia is makiing a comeback. Let's face it, our systems are grinding to a halt. Our system is failing because we have way too many people taking out of the system, unbridled greed at the top of the economy and we are living in a global economy where American labor has to compete with 3rd world labor. If ya'll haven't noticed our standard of living is headed downward to meet the 3rd world standard not the other way around. My rant for today!

I disagree.

No how do I tie this to a gun discussion forum? Let me try:

The two largest pipelines, of support, that you refer too are Medicare and Social Security. Last time I checked, those were pretty popular. The other stuff is transient. At least, I hear it appears we are going to make a profit from helping those greedy Wall Street folks.

The problem is relatively simple: the larger segment of the population is aging and living longer. That is hard to support by the current rules.

The nascent point is actually promoting a sense of responsibility: "do I need this or can do with less, should I defer my share till I need it, perhaps work a little longer"? (Sympathetically: that's a hard conversation)

Responsibility is the key issue that the public doesn't want to hear if it pertains directly to them, which is why politicians don't engage in that conversation, regardless of whether this pertains to personal gun ownership or this other stuff.

egad, the drift will get this thread shut down.

So, let's try to keep it tied to NPR and guns.

Many of us listen to NPR through our local affiliates. The local public radio stations are all over the map, ranging from such low-wattage operations for neighborhoods on up to powerhouse operations like MPR (Minnesota Public Radio).

Generally, NPR's reporting on firearms has gotten more 'objective'--as the opening post noted, they simply reported a local sherrif's recommendations. However, their base of operations--primarily the East Coast--and their long-term employees--lead them to fairly-obvious bias whenever analysis is concerned.

Mexico is more dangerous than Afghanistan right now as far as deaths are concerned. I think you'd have to be crazy not to arm yourself in that situation.

As to NPR, I listen all the time. No news source can be devoid of bias entirely, reporters are only people. But they are very professional about it and have people of all viewpoints on their shows. They challenge my views (translation: say things I disagree with) sometimes, but they do so in a basically logical way. You'll find no crazy rants and chalkboards with conspiracy theories.

I like NPR. Don't own Birkenstocks (prefer cowboy boots) but do drive a Volkswagen GTI.

To be honest, I would be surprised to learn there were more than a couple of people in Hudspeth County who weren't armed. A least a rifle for varmints or such. Plus, they had the big hoo-rah wit the Texas Separatists and some cults in that area. Jeff Davis, Brewster and Presidio Counties are very much like Hudspeth and unless you live in Ft. Davis, Alpine or Marfa, you're going to be waiting a while for help, even in the best of times. Brewster County has 8,866 people spread out over an area larger than Delaware and Rhode Island combined.

Don't know Sheriff West, but I've known a few sheriffs in West Texas counties and they're pretty decent guys who speak plainly. I am glad Sheriff West did the same in this instance.

Pro NPR
Pro gun ownership and carry
Pro intellectual honesty
Pro rational discussion
Anti- Left/Right wingnuttiness

I listen to NPR on my way to and from work every day. Sometimes I'll listen to Rush during the day, just to have something in the background. Overall, I find NPR's reporting fairly objective. Also, as others have said, they seem to run news stories for grownups, not the usual juvenile rubbish that other stations seem to indulge in.

As for that Sheriff's statement: Right On! I only pray that this may be a resurgence of the idea of personal responsibility, and that and the end of the day YOU are responsible for yourself, and its YOUR job to take care of YOURSELF. A rather radical and unpopular idea for across the political spectrum, I know.

There's nothing wrong with NPR's reporting, in my view. If you haven't tuned in, for whatever reason, you are missing an informative window on the world. There's also nothing wrong with the views of the sheriff in question; it's too bad, in fact, that more folks who hold similar jobs don't share the man's views.

^Volvo did make the ultimate station wagon though. I forget the model, but I remember seeing these massive 6-pot billet calipers in the front wheels, and later looking it up, noted a 400-something horsepower figure and 4wd. There's excitement in anything if you look around.
That'd be the V70R AWD. 300hp in factory tune (waaay more available with a little tweaking), 6-speed manual, Brembo brakes.

Sorry, I was working from a 2y-o memory. Still a badass car, like a more luxurious Evo.

yea... i bet that is REALLY fair and balanced

Sounds like you have every christian news outlet pegged as conservative/right wing and pro gun. I'm sorry sir, but you are wrong in your stereotyping. My point was I prefer to draw from a plethora of online news services to get my news. Perhaps I should have been more clear.

NPR makes for an interesting commute occasionally, if your into international news. I'd say they try to be fairly neutral when it comes to politics. Then again, my definition of neutral might be more forgiving, as I'm comparing them against the other Chicago news sources. Hell, even music stations around here get into political jibber-jabber.

Lately I've been rotating my stations. I'm so bored with radio lately that I actually listen to the Liberal Air America occasionally. When you put the "logical" part of your brain in supspended animation, certain segments of Air America can actually be quite amusing.
