Anybody ever tried tannerite?

My son works for Tanner manufacturing Tannerite. Trust me...it is a lot of fun. You can blow a lot of crap up with it. They do have a new target called White Lightning that can be detonated with a .22. If you have the opportunity to try it out...go for it!

I haven't had the opportunity to shoot the White Lightning. It is just hitting the market. Yes, it is supposed to detonate using a .22 cal. I haven't seen it but my son says it is about the size of a clay disc. We are supposed to be having a big target practic day coming up so I will get to check it out. Will post update then.

An 1894c will set off 1lb under a plastic 55gal drum w/ buffalo bore 158s. The drum only goes 50' in the air. Just sayin':D

Yea, that stuff is the best! Really turns recreational shooting up a notch or...seven!! I hear it's being banned.. can anyone verify?

I used to work for a blaster. Blowing stuff up is fun! Shooting at stuff that blows up is lots of fun. Tannerite is a pussycat compared to some of the stuff we used to set off. 1# of some of that stuff detonated on hard ground would leave a crater 24 to 30 inches in diameter and 12 to 14 inches deep.

Little different experience, and I'm not complaining, just relating .

We set a pound on a pallet( on edge, so it was ~ 3 feet off the ground) with an unopened can of Coke on top of the Tannerite. Videoed from behind me as I sent a .223 bullet at about 3100. The video captured 4 or 5 frames with the bullet enroute, vapor trail included, and when it hit the pop can went spinning up about 20 feet and landed still unopened. The boom and smoke cloud were real impressive, though. Sorry, it wasn't my camera (I dunno how to post it anyway.)

I posted this one over on the Hawaii gun site when they asked about Tannerite. Multiple cameras, slo-mo, shock wave, stuff flying all around --all the good things in life.

Quotes:

"I love America!"

"God is good... He has blessed us with Tannerite... Bible... Bible right there...Preach it..."

Tracer round inbound, shock wave, in slo mo beginning at 1:10.

Are there any handling requirements? It seems like very stable stuff or it wouldn't be on the market.

As I understand it, it is a mixture of two powders that come in seperate packages and it does not become an explosive until they are mixed and it can not be ignited by fire alone.

I've seen recipes on Google to make similar stuff using ammonium nitrate fertilizer and aluminum powder [available on ebay]. Supposedly much less expensive than Tannerite. I have no experience with the homemade stuff so can't give any actual experience.

Large sales of ammonium nitrate tend to be tracked these days since its a precursor to many forms of other things that go boom by not so friendly people. Check your local laws before having the do it yourself kind of fun :)

Fun stuff. We had a car door come flying back about 60 yards towards the firing line from the 100 yard range at one of the Silencer Shoots a few years ago.

Yes it is. The two ingredients are prilled ammonia nitrate and the powder you mix into it is German brown powered aluminum.

Anyone contemplating homemade targets, be very careful. This guy is facing serious charges after his mixture blew up.

I read the article. This guy was dumb and will face some kind of charges. Tannerite and other binary explosives are mostly legal for people to transport and use under federal law. Once mixed it is not legal to transport and needs to be used on site. Sounds like this tool mixed some up in a site he should not have and it went boom or flashed prematurely.

Unless you know what you are doing and even when you do, mixing explosives is a dangerous and hazardous occupation. Don't do it at home.
