I have appreciated Coronach's record of the standard M&P .40, and other reports on the M&P compact 9mm. Looking for anyone with firsthand experiencing shooting the compact .40. I am trying to decide between compact 9 and compact .40 for primary CCW. Gun size/configuration is the same for both, except for magazine compacity. I have had some experience with several 9's, none with a .40. Noobie Question. Is there a larger difference shooting a 9mm vs .40, or .40 vs .45? What I mean is.... I'm quite comfortable shooting most 9's, is there a bigger adjustment going from 9 to .40, or going from .40 to .45......(double-tap times, recoil control, etc).

Well, I was gonna say me, but I see you read my range report. :D

I don't think the M&P40Cs are in wide circulation yet. I would advise you to test fire a full-size M&P40 and a M&P9C. It the 40C is, unsurprisingly, somewhere in between those two. The M&P platform handles the .40 round pretty well. If you can handle the recoil of the fullsize, you'll be fine with the compact. The 40C I shot felt a lot like the 9C in the ergonomics department.

In truth, there is not a lot of variation across the 4 designs, which I really like. The compacts shoot like real deal, full size guns. That is a huge plus in my book.

Thanks for the advice Coronach. I will try to find a fullsize .40 to shoot. Keep up the round/malfunction count, I like the info.

I absolutely love the M&P .40 - I shot it for the first time last night.

A few things about my taste: i am not a big fan of Glocks or Polymer body firearms, I really like 1911's. BUT I LOVE THE M&P .40 and after my range time last night I am considering getting it! LOVE IT!

I have had a M&P .40 Compact for a couple of day now. Here is a copy of a review I did on another site. I really like this gun!!

Hi Guys,
I am a pretty new member here. I have seen the full sized M&P's before, but they were bigger than I was interested in, but they did appear to be a very nice gun. I have read all that I could find on the M&P guns and they sounded pretty interesting to me. This past Sunday, I made the mistake of going into a local shooting range and they had just received the M&P Compacts. I picked up the .40 and it was pretty much love at first feel!! It felt awesome in my hand!! So, I did something that I hope I will not regret, I went back in yesterday and traded in my Glock G27 for this gun :what:. The only question still up in the air with these new M&P firearms, for me, is durability and reliability. I have talked with a couple of people who's opinions I respect very much and they think that they are awesome guns and will hold up well. The Glock was a great gun and has never given my a bit of trouble. I do not have the $$ to just go out and buy another gun, so this was the only way to do it. So far, I really like the M&P!!
I got home too late last night to shoot the gun and it needed to be cleaned and lubed first anyway, so I spent the evening doing that. She is looking nice!!
I live WAY OUT in the country, so this morning, I left home a bit early and drove up the road behind our house. Now I will admit to not shooting enough to be a real marksman and I could shoot ok with my Glock but not very impressive stuff. This morning I set a can up at about 30 ft and fired one off. First shot out of my new gun, I HIT THE CAN :D. Second shot, I hit the can :D :D. Third shot, I missed :( . I honestly am not sure I would have hit all three times with my Glock, and the M&P is still a brand new gun. I have read and can now see(feel) that the trigger is a bit gritty feeling. It sounds like that will go away in time and with rounds through the gun. Also, if I knew how, I could probably polish some parts and smooth it out. In the mean time, I have just been doing some dry firing to help work it out. There is noticeably less felt recoil with the M&P. It is still a snappy round, but it feels good. I am guessing here, but the better shooting and the recoil are probably due to a more ergonomic gun. The Glock is kind of like holding a brick
I hope this report does not sound like I am knocking the Glock. I am not at all. I used to talk down about Glock until I bought one. I will not ever do that again. I think that the Glock is an outstanding gun with a very good track record. I will probably buy another one someday, if I get extra $$.
If any of you are looking for a holster for your M&P's, I would like to point you to a man in Florida who does outstanding work ( http://kdholsters.com/ ). Kevin make leather holsters and IMHO, they are a work of art. I emailed Kevin on Sunday asking him if he would be able to make me a holster for the Compact. I got an email Monday morning from him saying that bet he could. In fact, he had just bought the 9mm Compact. I will be getting one of his Cochise Defenders!! There is a waiting period involved, but what you receive is worth every single day. He made a holster for my Kel tec P3AT. I will post a picture of it.
So to close this, so far, I am extremely impressed with my new M&P .40 Compact. It is a great gun!! I will also admit that I like the part that says U.S.A!!
Here are some pictures for you all. Thanks for reading.

Ron, please post more info after you have shot more. I am very interested in this gun for myself but because it is so new, nobody seems to have firsthand experience with it. There are quite a few threads about the standard M&P .40 but not the compact. I have held the compact 9, I have small hands and that gun felt great in my hand, maybe better than any other auto I have held. The compact .40 is exactly same size as 9, just with smaller magazine capacity. I noticed your pics did not have magazine extension. I assume you got 1 magazine with extension, and one without? How would you compare the recoil/controllability of this gun with the similar platform in 9mm?

Thanks rogerjames, it works now.

I will try and report from time to time on this gun. I have no idea how it compares with a 9mm. I have not shot a 9mm for a long time. I do know that it has less recoil than the Glock G27 that I had. It is very comfortable to shoot! I did get two mags with one having the mag extension. I did not use a mag extension on the G27 and won't very much on this one either. I am used to my pinky finger hanging.

Will do. I actually have had very little opportunity to shoot it lately (as the stalled RC shows). And be advised that it is a fullsize that is being shot, not a compact, in that ongoing roundcount.
