Anyone arm themselves at Home?

I forgot to note that if I am at work my house gun (beretta) is also my CCW/truck gun, so I leave a different gun out for the wife. She prefers my Taurus 85 ultralite.

I keep a pistol at a minumum within reach most of the time. When I'm outside working around the place (we have acreage in the country) I always keep a rifle or shotgun within easy reach. Too many crazies growing weed in the mountains to not keep something within reach.

Within "reach"?

To some other posters: I can't grasp the notion of guns laying around, or "hidden" so you can go "grab 'em quick". Quick compared to what? What gun "laying around" or "hidden" is quick or "safe"?

A primary defense gun personally worn is the only thing that reliably comes close to "quick". Anything approaching "safe" is in your possession or locked-up.

No. I do sometimes fondle and sleep with a new gun. Of course it is unloaded. I have no fears.

How sad.

I think roger was joking, or at least, I hope he was. ;)

But I agree that just having guns "lying around" where they can be bumped or where an intruder might get to one before you and arm himself, is probably a bad idea. Even if its hidden, if you have kids they will probably find them eventually. If you gonna arm yourself at home, it probably needs to be on your person. Or at least, take it out of the holster and set it on the computer desk when you're sitting there, but re-holster if you leave the room.

I've never been one to hide guns around the house. It leaves them vulnerable to theft, misuse and, God forbid, fire. I either have it on me or in the safe.

...went to packing a 1965 S&W Model 60. Wife got tired of me leaving dents in the walls from my 870 slung on my shoulder...;)

Sure, why not? Sometimes on the body, but always within easy reach (except when small children are visiting, then always directly in my control).

Except I have to agree with some other posters - no guns in the shower!

My father keeps a snubie in a sealed jar in the bathroom, I guess that's a better alternative. A gun in the shower is crazy. The ammo will eventually be compromised and the gun will be as rusty as an old boat anchor in short order. Not to mention the likelihood of an accident.

To answer the OP question, yes, I am armed at home.

I believe that a majority of all people who own firearms are going to be armed with a firearm in some way inside their homes.

I live in a one-room apartment so a firearm anywhere in my home is close but yes I do keep a pistol locked and loaded and near me at all times. Especially whenever I open the door to someone unexpectedly. Considering the number of home invasions and muggings in my area I feel perfectly justified in my actions. Only problem is that because I live in a one room apartment with very thin walls and neighbors on 3 sides its not overly practical to use either my pistols or my rifles in self defense unless they are between me and the street. However I do make sure to keep several knives within reach at all times. Hell at one point my mother came by and found the knife I keep hidden in my bathroom. That was an interesting conversation.
Hhmmm....I used to keep a double-edged dagger in the bathroom, in easy reach of all the facilities.--Patrice

P.S. Also, used to do the firearm in every room.

I keep an all weather machete hanging in my bathroom (quickly and easily accessible from any point in the room). There are various knives in each room of the house and I generally have at least 2 or 3 different knives on me most of the time (various blades for various tasks). The only room that doesn't have a blunt weapon, a knife, or a gun in it is my attic (and I actually found a F.A.B. RG10 in there when we moved in, so there you go!)

+1 on the knife idea

The handgun and main carry folding knife stays on me, while I keep various knives hidden around the home. Sometimes a knife is going to be a better SD tool in certain confined locations in your home, such as in a corner, in a small closet, etc.

No. Don't have a young boy anymore, but they are very skilled at finding handguns etc. They are more observant than many of their parents, and the evidence is in the cemetaries.

But I keep a few filled stripper clips (in plastic bag) a few feet from the SKS, in case I see "the Wez" ("Go Go Go!") and a few other barbarians on bikes chasing Mel Gibson down our street.
Would then realize that folks at "SKSboards" are really onto something.

YES. At any given time there are 10 or so loaded guns in my home, vehicles, business office, and on my person. But no one will ever see any of them unless they are misbehaving.

I doubt this very much. Most firearms owners that I know are casual hunters or the grown children of casual hunters. They've got some long guns locked up somewhere in the house, but they may or may not have any ammunition in the house, and they may or may not even remember the combination to the gun safe offhand.
