Anyone arm themselves at Home?

If I am dressed my gun is on my hip, all the time, and I sleep with a revolver under my pillow. I wear every where I go except for those few places it is illegal, I even carry when I go to my bank. I suppose my experience with bad guys has put me little bit on edge.

Yes ...

As soon as I get home, I go into my bedroom and change into comfy, casual clothes. My carry gun + holster goes on the bedside table.

but ...

We've had no children at home for quite some time now. No matter where I am in my house there's a loaded gun within inches, whether I am in the computer room, the living room (actually 3 strategically placed firearms there), the kitchen, bathroom, hall or bedroom. Always a loaded gun nearby. If I step outside my door, I have a gun on my person.

Armed at Home?

I would expect that all members of this forum are able to decide what they need to do in their home in the area in which they live. I have a follow on question. How willing and able are you to shoot to kill a home invader that will not stop?

Yes, if not on my person then very close at hand at all times when in the home. If outside the home, yes, at all times.

As for the follow up question from jiminhobesound, yes, willing and able, no doubt about it!

If you make the decision to carry a gun you already should be aware that you are now committed to protecting yourself and your family in your home, at any cost. I am not even talking about outside of your home for the purpose of this discussion. But how can you ask such a question? When you say the perp won't stop, what decision is left? Are you going to leave, and allow him to kill your family? I don't get the question. And it has nothing to do with where you live. I had doormen garage attendants, luxury high rise building, my friend was in the five towns on LI. private on the water. Bad guys go where the money is or at least where they think or have been told it is. They are patient and will wait weeks or even months to strike. I got hit on Christmas Eve Day, I was supposed to have according to their information, 50 to 60 thousand on me, in salaries and bonuses. Of course I didn't. So don't be naive and think that if you live in a good neighborhood these kind of things won't happen. My friend Barry, was followed into his driveway in Boca Raton, because he was driving a Rolls Royce, he was a member of my club, and owned maybe 20 cars. Thank god he had his 45, and saw them before they got to him, shots were fired and returned. 2 am coming home from a party driving on 95 from a friend’s house. You don't know when this stuff is going to occur, it happens every day, ask a LEO. You live your life and try to be aware as best you can, you can't stop living just because there are animals out there. You deal with an animal as is necessary. Let me ask you, what would you do if the guy was in your house threatining to kill your family or you and as you said, he won't stop?

I live in a great, low crime, white picket fence neighborhood and yet I carry at home. The wife still shoots me a funny look when she gives me a hug and gets a hand full of 1911 instead of my gut, though. I dont even notice that I have a gun on me anymore.

lizziedog1:
The husband of my wife's friend walked into a ground floor La Quinta room about 15-18 years ago in north Jackson, MS, right by I-55.

Well, after the door was first closed, somebody knocked on it, and a stranger said "You left your key in the door".
G. thanked him and then thought that he had closed the door again.

Soon after that, two guys suddenly opened the door and walked in with a gun. They got his wallet and other stuff.
G. never figured out whether the "helpful stranger" had stuck something into it to prevent it from closing, but he must have not had the deadbolt/bracket or chain etc engaged.

Never stay on a ground floor, unless the 'motel' has inside doors, and maybe you are a distance from any exit.

To answer the OP, my SKS is in a closet with ammo on stripper clips nearby, and though we are in a safe area (almost rural), though extremely unlikely, something really strange could (one day) happen in the street. Could at least stand in a garage shadow to observe, and not be defenseless. My only 'kid' is 22 and lives about ten miles away.

If my pants are on, my gun is on. Otherwise, there is at least one handgun within arms reach.

Yes. I live in a seasonal resort area. In season the BGs look for targets of opportunity and have been known to brazenly enter houses in the daytime, assuming everyone's at the beach. In the winter, "homeless" people also scout for empty rentals and other targets of opportunity.

When company drops in unannounced, I like to be preparrd to receive them.

Ive always left my guns in the safe because I always thought what am I a nut, who carries in their home. Well stupid me lol After reading this post I will definitely start carrying in my home now. At least I wont be the only "nut",

No offense to anyone of course :)

I work at home. We live in a nice neighborhood but our house was broken into shortly after we moved in. Something apparently scared the would-be burglars off because we came home to an open back door and a bit of a mess but nothing of significance missing. I have carried ever since.

I have always believed that the best place for a self-defense weapon is in the immediate possession of the self being defended. What I carry varies: right now, it's a Model 637 in a Blackhawk Serpa holster (I don't let the holster get dirty so I don't worry about the release getting jammed).

When I answer the door, I drape my shirt over the gun. I don't answer the door with gun in hand as that might be considered brandishing.

At home, a gun is always on me or within a few yards (usually within arms reach).

Response to Gym on prepared to shoot to kill

You apparently thought this to be a facetious question. Study the problem and I think you will find that the best personal defense training systems present this question and reaction training that sets conditions of response. A bad guy can cover a lot of distance if one hesitates. Human nature has its failures.

I don't wear my gun when I'm at home, however, it is always close by. However, everytime the door bell rings, first thing I do is shove my gun in my waistband. Glad to hear I'm not the only one who feels this way

Jim, Once you are in the mix it all happens very fast. You have to really decide what you can do morally and physically. It's easier for me to say what I said having had those feelings run up and down my back and stomach. You will not have time to think, Usually, that's why we train mentally and physically for this stuff. I hope you never see anything like that, but if you had, you would realize that there is really no decision to make. It's survival, and that is the strongest instinct we have. No matter how educated or peacfull one is, if you try to kill them, they will react with strength and determination that they never knew they possesed. Chances are you will know, if anything terrible "god forbid" befalls you.
Just have a plan, an alarm, a dog, a panick code that appears to shut your system off while sending out a "robbery in progress" call. and you weapon either on you or in the room, some just place a pistol in every room to avoid carrying, I am into cameras now. No one wants their picture taken. If you send the images to off premises servers, no one can grab the recording. I have seen guys walk up to homes, see the video cameras, and just walk away. They are a great deterent.
I must commend law enforcement on responding to holdup codes, my manager hit the old squeeze panick switches and they closed the street on both sides to traffic. I had LEO's come in both doors shotguns at the ready. Even here in Vero, my wife set it off on the slider, and they insisted on coming in and clearing the entire house. None of this "it was just a mistake", it was more like keep your hands where we can see them, until they saw for themselves that we really lived there.
Much can be prevented, but there is always the wacko who just doesn't care or is so stoned it dosen't matter, or a bump to the rear of your car, following you home if you drive a certain car, the list is endless. You may not want to shoot someone over a car, I don't, but there are people who will take the car and shoot you anyway. It's kind of hard to tell the difference, that's why I didn't understand the question, if you find you need to draw your wepon, then you are already in a pickle. If the guy advances on you, what's your plan, he has a gun, a knife a steel bat. Are you prepared to back up and put distance between you. You can't just decide to stop. He isn't going to stop if he's gone there. You said he wasn't stopping, tell me your choices if I misinterpreted something.

the answer is the resounding YES... Question- Is your life a gift from God?
follow-up Question- Is it worth defending?

If the answer is yes to either of those questions you can alleviate any feelings of being a nut for doing so...
