I've read lots of threads on modifying them, and how fun they are and cheap and what-not, but how about practicality? Do you hunt with one? Do you like it? Do you bring home game? Thanks for the info.

I love hunting with a mosin, it adds a new dimension to the challenge. Either you have to me poor or a purist to appreciate the mosin, I'm both :D.

A Mosin is a Russian 30-06 (or more accurately, the 30-06 is an American 7.62X54R, since it came along 12 years later...). you can hunt moose & bear with it...Deer are easy.

Deer have hides that pervent anything less than .30 cal AP.. But 22lr seems to have a strong following too- I wonder if the answer lies somewhere in the middle.......
To the OP, If I can get ahold of some quality SP ammo in x54r, I'll be hunting deer with one of mine-:D

Best like the "scout rifle" concept because the action is Manlicher (sp?) type with the back ring split for the bolt to travel through. You'd have to side mount a scope, probably some mounts out there, but I haven't looked.

Of course, if you're going to use irons, fine, but forget that 300 yard effectiveness. I'd rather just get a Winchester 94 and put a receiver ghost ring aperture on it, more effective weapon. But, if all you have is an iron sighted Mosin......beats a pike I suppose.

trueblue has the right idea, and I agree on both counts as well..

7.62x54r is a round I'm in love with for a near infinite amount of reasons...

top 3 being - it's cheap, it's powerful, and there's a lot of it out there. I'd love to bag a deer with an ironsighted m44, and I hunt in the perfect environment to do so, BUT.. I'm too damned desperate to rely on my shady performance with the m44 to allow me to pick it over my .270 which I have yet to miss with.

Yes, yes, my desire to have meat is far far greater than my desire to have fun.

I just acquired an M44, and wouldn't hesitate to take it deer hunting. My first "deer rifle," acquired over 40 years ago, was a .303 Enfield. All the .30 cal milsurps do just fine as "deer rifles."

I've gone out with my M39 in original configuration a few times. Never got the opportunity to put into action though. I have no doubts that it would have done the job.

I just took down a 150 pound spike (as my father said, "That deer needed killing") a few days ago with my M44. Let's just say 203 grain soft points puts a hurt on them. Big time. :)

my first deer rifle was an M1 Garand in 30-06 worked great on colorado muleys and elk soyou should have no problem with the mosin

As mentioned above, 7.62x54R is comparable in power to .30-06. IOW, it's got plenty of punch for deer and is usable with care on larger game.

With respect to the M-N rifles, people have been taking Pennsylvania long rifles out into the woods for a couple centuries. The "long and cumbersome" M-Ns are handy in comparison.

I have killed deer and a hog with a k98k so far.I have been out with my mosins but just haven't had a clear/good shot yet...but season isn't over until jan:).

this mosin is deadly accurate with the wolf 203 gr sp's.

There are dozens of Mosin related hunting pics over on the collector's boards. You do not need a scope, PERIOD. Hayha bagged himself over 500 Rooskies without any optics at all.

jerkface11: Don't you ever read these threads? Anything less powerful than .300 Weatherby will bounce off whitetail.

And that my friends is why we all should be deer hunting with a 50 BMG

You dare try to be in the same woods with these bloodthirsty demons? You're a braver (or stupider) man than I, Brasskeeper. I prefer airstrikes myself. Sure, not much meat left, but I honestly wouldn't touch that damnedable stuff.

:)

My favorite deer rifle is a 1942 M39 B-barrel mosin. It has done me very well in heavy woods or shooting a running buck at 60 yards in an open field. Last year I got a doe with a M91 VKT mosin. This year I plan on using a 1943 M39 SKy mosin. All these rifles I use get under 2 MOA and come to my shoulder easily when I need a quick shot. My Remington and Winchester hunting buddies are always amazed at how I always get my deer on opening day with that old "junk". I just tell them I am lucky (and I am for discovering how accurate Finnish mosins are!)

I have not taken a deer with my 91/30 yet but here is a pig I took with it last year. Yes they will do the job very well out to 200 yards but I just hunt with mine for fun once in a while.
