Anyone deer hunt with a Mosin Nagant?

I just picked up a 1917 Remington "Finn Cub" Mosin today. I'll probably end up hunting with it at least once :).

Anyone got any links for scope mounts/scopes for these guns?

I tried hunting with my M-39 yesterda, as a matter of fact. I missed. My fault, not the rifle, 'cause I know for sure that M-39 will put five in an inch.

Stupid deer wouldn't hold still, all running up the hill between the trees.

Vaarok,

that's when you call to the deer to get it to stop. That's how I've killed my past two. Bucks in rut don't stop for much, except a good imitation call.

I went deer hunting with my M44 scout this year, but I didn't get to shoot it at anything. I was more than confident that the 203 grain soft points I was using would get the job done.

The Mosin seemed sufficient for Ludmilya Pavlichenko. She caused the early retirement of over 300 German Infantrymen with one during WW2.

Firearms in general are only as good as the trigger puller.

I took my M44 and my son had the SKS this weekend. Saw a small doe on Friday and nothing on Saturday. I'm confident that either would take out a deer and I'm still hopeful we can prove it this year.

I can't use any modern long weapon except a shotgun/slug in Ohio. (Handguns & charcoal-burnin' front-stuffers have their own rules)

However, I did buy some Barnaul Arsenal 203-Gr(??) or so soft-point x54 ammo. If I do my part, would put a serious hurtin' on anything I would hunt.

Amen to that:

^^I was told that wolf couldn't shoot worth the crap.I''m thinking of getting one of these old beaters just for fun(and the price).

Gun Lover- Wolf Gold Line is the brass cased, boxer primed wolf, it has nothing in common with the steel cased blasting ammo. Strangely enough, Russian ammo works well in a Russian gun :D.

You heard wrong. Those same factories have been making 54R for generations. Other than some very narrow bore prewar Finns, the Wolf always shoots well. Sometimes it gives the best groups of all. My Finn M91 gets MOA groups with the Wolf light ball.

Wolf and Wolf Gold are not made by the same people.
Wolf is made in Russia.
Wolf Gold is made by Prvi Partisan, and is very good stuff.

Winchester is S&B ammo with a different headstamp.

7.62x54R will most certainly take deer, and anything else a .30'06 will take, as they are in the same class.

If you are going to do a scout mount use good rings. My M44 destroyed a set of aluminum rings with the recoil.

What ammo your mosin likes depends on the mosin. Miniscule differences in bore diameter and condition can mean one rifle will spray one brand of ammo, and yet drive tacks with another. We tell people to try various flavors and weights of surplus, and the rule is no different with hunting ammunition.

"Besides his sniper kills, Simo Häyhä was also credited with as many as two hundred kills with a Suomi M-31 SMG submachine gun, thus bringing his credited kills to at least 705. However, the latter claim has never been substantiated. All of Häyhä's kills were accomplished within 100 days prior to injuries caused by an enemy bullet. Häyhä's record of an average of 5 kills a day, almost one kill per daylight hour of the short winter day, is unique."

I'm pretty sure Simo Hayha has Pavlichenko beat.. He sniped with with mosin using only iron sights!:what:

shot one yesterday with my m44 and winchester 180 soft points open sights. this gun shoots 6 to eight inch groups with bulgy surp and 2 to 3 inch with winchester

I think that more people would have more fun if they started hunting with old time rifles like the mosins, k98's and enfields. anyone can go out and buy a 1000.00 savage f-class rifle in .308 and scope it, then shoot a derr at 1500 meters, and bragg. but... when you go and shoot a mulie or nice size buck at 200yards with your ol 8mm mauser, open sight, (or old sniper retical){i klnow, kinda contradictory of what i just stated, but...ohwell} then, you can really be proud. but, its not for everyone.

There are dozens of Mosin related hunting pics over on the collector's boards. You do not need a scope, PERIOD. Hayha bagged himself over 500 Rooskies without any optics at all.

Neither of them had to worry much about shot placement either. Hayha didn't need to track Russians for two miles after 1/2 of the their right arm blown off and Pavlichenko never had to field dress or eat a gutshot German.

All silly sniper comparisons aside, there is no reason that a M-N wouldn't make a very nice deer rifle provided that the shooter understands the rifle's and his own limitations, which really goes for any rifle.
