I think that I'm spending too much time (and money) at our local shooting range/gun store.

Everyone knows my name (even the part time help!). The owner and the owners wife asks me how I'm doing. I didn't renew my membership to the range portion but they give me member prices (didn't renew because I had guns on lay-a-way there). When I ask to look at any of the rifles/shotguns behind the counter they tell me to help myself (as in, go behind the counter and check em out). Even through they know full well that I can't afford that new (well, to me) machine gun they allow me to handle it.

They have knocked off the NICS check fee a number of times (or taken the fee off the price of the gun). They have given me discounts on guns when I didn't even ask them. The usual lay-a-way plan is 30 days, they allow me up to months to pay off an item (took me almost 4 months to pay off my AR). I've changed my mind at least three times (had other rifles on Lay-A-Way that I "traded" for what became my AR) and no hassle or "attitude".

And all my purchases have been "low end" items (except the AR and the Kimber) and not that many:

Kimber 1911
Tauras .357
XM-15 w/two uppers
Heritage Arms .22 w/two cylinders
2 SKS's
And of course some smaller items (holsters, reloaders, mags, etc..)

So, anyone else have this problem?

They also know my name, and could probably complete my 4473's. What is a NICS check fee? I've heard of a transfer fee on internet sale, but a separate fee for NICS?

And as far as the range, I go out to the National Forest or, if really conformative, one of the state park firing ranges--No fees.

Yeah, I wondered about the NICS fee too. What state is this? In my state, before I had a CCW the shop just called the state police and the police ran the check. I don't recall there being any fee.

Here they charge $15 to $20 for the FBI check, but with a CCW I can skip it.

Wayne, sounds like you got a nice place there. :)

Hawk,

Oregon state law enables the NICS folks to charge a fee for the check. It is not directly thru the FBI but is state run (they can get your check on the FBI databases as well as check your state standing that would rule you out to buy). IIRC they did try to enable CHL holders to not have to go through the check but then that meant that the state wouldn't get the extra money. From my understanding, if you call the FBI directly, they are not allowed to charge for the service but in the states that the FBI has given authority to run their own checks, they are allowed to add a fee.

This, just like other gun control laws, is confusing even to the best of people trying to understand exactly what can be done, what fees can be charged, and if you are even allowed to wake up in the morning.

I'm told that the first step in solving a problem is admiting to having the problem.....................Therefore I deny having a gun problem. :neener: Besides, YOUR GETTING DISCOUNTS?? Not fair :cuss:

dude! you got it easy! when i go to the gunshop i am subjected to having to drool uncontrollably because i get handed a colt commando and am told to 'run around making machine gun noises'. then i get punked when they say 'take this home for a few days, bring it back when you're bored................just kidding!'

they are so cruel to me.

There is one guy at the shop I frequent that knows my name...all the other guys left and I just haven't struck up a relationship with the new guys. Everyone at both shops in town recognizes me, but we're not on a first name basis. I haven't bought any guns in about 5 months...maybe I'm on the road to recovery?

Nah, I'm just in remission right now :uhoh:
