Anyone else here a fan of the 8mm Mauser?

And I thought the 600 rounds I have was a lot.
It is a lot ... especially if all that you are shooting it with is a bolt rifle. :)

I recall in late 1999 one of the young guys (maybe 21?) that worked for me overheard me tell someone on the phone that I had found a good price for 5.56mm ammo and ordered a case of it.

He seemed a bit shocked and asked me how many "bullets" are in a case. I told him that the QTY varies but this one contains 1000 cartridges. He was stunned ... and after a wordless moment ask what I planned on doing with that many "bullets". I replied "shoot them" and he walked off in a state.

The product of a liberal parenting & public school education. <sigh>

Just a side note about what is alot of ammo.

I have been blessed in my life to have gone to a big ol heap of auctions.. 30 to 10 years ago, you would go to multi gun estate auctions and alot of ammo was 1 full table of ammo.. Today, the amount of ammo has grown to 5 to 10 tables with bulk boxes on the floor. Now there have been exceptions both then and now, but I am talking about your "average" run of the mill auction (If such a creature even exits)..

I have since divested myself of the k98k since the quality of surplus ammo has suffered and the price of commercial sky rocketed.
I sold the rifle above along with the 8mm dies a few years ago. I do not miss the headache 8mm 196 grain rounds gave me after a 100 shot.

Biggest problem with 8x57 is that in the USA it’s all loaded to 1888 “Commission Rifle” levels to be safe in the old actions. So commercial ammo is great for plinking but lousy for the potential of the cartridge. And it’s not cheap nor available with many choices in bullet. So there’s almost no incentive for makers to chamber new rifles in it.

I have a beautiful Yugo refurb K98k. Nice historical piece but I don’t shoot it a lot.

My late dear Uncle Gil brought this one home from Germany in WW2 . Obendorf 98 sporter in 8mm . He used it with the Redfield peep sight he added until the later 50s when his ship came in and he bought a 30-06 Mannlicher Schoenauer from Abocrombie and Fitch NYC.

While I have never hunted with it (my uncle got his deer and even a moose or two in New England every year with it, he was an NYPD cop) I have shot it quite alot. It shoots common 8x57 ammo and was 2" accurate at 100 yards when my eyes were better. My oldest son in NJ now has it as his only rifle in that draconian State . He is well armed tho

I started with a mismatched surplus and a pile of cheap 8x57. I've killed game with everything from the sierra 150 to the 250 Woodleigh. I hunt and shoot with the 30/06 also and cant see any practical difference between the two in 20 years of hunting and shooting . A solid hit from either is very effective .
