The 1911 has been around for yeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrssssss. It has stood the test of time and is still going strong. As far as Taurus their either great or horrible sorta roll the dice on them. It really depends how much you want to spend. A Springfield loaded is a good start.

I know that when it comes to a 1911.. a "good" one, i'm looking at 900+.. i'm a very practical guy, i'm not picky when it comes to the grip, trigger etc etc.. i just wants something that's going to work, that will be able to withstand some abuse, this wont be a "safe queen", if anyone can recommend a 1911 that's good straight out the box without having any issues after 5k+ rounds without having to "trick it out" that's not heavy in the pocket then that's what i'm looking for.

I paid $475 for my stainless MILSPEC with no problems. A bare bones Springer is a good choice in you want to add bells and whistles later. STI Spartan start around $600 so their are some good choices out there without breaking the bank.:)

Have a taurus 6 shooter, no 1911's , but for a first time buy I would look at a SA Mil Spec. I got one used and love it.

I can give you a personal first hand review of the pistol. My uncle purchased one about 3 months ago. He is a big 1911 guy, and got the shock when he saw what you get for the money. The ad had a list of stuff that totaled like 2000 and he could get one at the time for 545 stainless version with 2 mags and all the goodies. He went ahead and got it, figuring what the hell, it cant be that bad. We shoot together every weekend, so I got to shoot it when it was brand new also. First impression:

Appearance: It was a very nice looking firearm. Everything was fitted well, no off gaps, everything tight. No scratches, nice finish.

Feel: It has very nice grips. The backstrap safety felt very good on the hands. It pointed very well and had a nice balance to it.

Function: The trigger felt great. I have seen guns that had expensive trigger jobs that didnt feel as good. The action was smooth. No FTF, FTE on 350 rounds, out of the box. In my previous experience literally all of the 1911s I shot new had a few hiccups. The second time we shot it we left it dirty on purpose then went out the next week and shot 200 through it without it choking either. Dirty or clean it was flawless.

Accuracy: For a production 1911 it was beyond what it should have been. I will say it like this, this gun was one of the top 5 1911s that I have shot as far as accuracy. It was vastly better than the ed brown that I used to own.

It may seem like I am tooting the horn of this pistol, but you WILL NOT FIND a better pistol for the price, if you are into 1911s. In fact, last week I took possesion of my own, a blued pt with wooden grips.

I have one, I love it, I absolutely would trust it with my life, and I think it is the best deal going in 1911's right now.

On the con side, the finish isn't super great, but it is acceptable. Also, some really don't like the Straight-* sights. It's a love/hate thing, I love them and would like to slap them on every service pistol I own. Accuracy has been excellent, as has function.

I have one. Just a thousand rounds through it but it has been flawless. All those features, lifetime warranty, 500 bucks. Whats not to love?

BTW, the 2 mags that come with pistol are very good.

I agree with the last three posters. I've had mine for over a year. No mechanical problems in 3-4k rounds. I shot a sub 2" group at 25 yards using Blazer Brass ammo. I'll probably never do that again and really should have framed the pistol and the target.:D

The only "problem" I've had with the Taurus is getting my reloads sized right for the pistol. The chamber seems to be a little tighter than other 1911's, including Kimbers. Once I figured that out, I can honestly say that the PT1911 will shoot anything.:D

The 1911 from them is the only pistol they make that I have never heard anything bad about. Maybe they are coming around in the QC department, finally.

Don't confuse inexpensive with cheap. Taurus has managed to create a very decent 1911 at an affordable price point. The finish on a Pt is its worst point and I've heard of some people having trouble with the ambi safety. But mine has several thousand rounds through it now and it has worked flawlessly and the finish is holding up fine. And it feeds any type of bullet I have been able to find to try out. I love my Ruger P series, too, but a 1911 is a lot of fun.

I've tried several.

Colt
Springfield
Para-Ordnance
Ballester Molina
Smith and Wesson.

Each ejected the spent shell casing in such a manner as to strike me right in the face.

Not every shot. Not even most shots.

Maybe 5% to 10%.

Is that supposed to be OK?

I don't know whose idea that was, but I'm done with the 1911.

For a basic, no frills 1911 I would choose the Springfield Armory G.I. model
every time. NIB Taurus PT 1911's are a "crap shoot" at best~! Just this
week, I had to replace one that was sold NIB; cuz the damn safety broke
off while the weapon was being used in competition. Needless to say, the
owner was very pissed off~! :cuss: ;)

I would pass just because their customer service sucks so bad.

Thanks for all your input. I am debating betweenn the Springer Mil-Spec & Taurus. I just wished they had a 1911 that's rock solid reliable but without the heavy price tag. Like i said before i dont really care about the grip, hammer bites etc etc.. my main concern with a firearm is RELIABILITY. A gun to depend on when needed, dont care about looks, name-brand.

safety broke
off while the weapon was being used in competition.

This is the most (only) common complaint regarding P.T. 1911 Q.C. I've read, the safety breaking.

Colt or Dan Wesson should fill the bill just fine Both made in America to. 1911's are not pocket pistols

I would go to www.m1911.org. They have all types of threads on the different 1911 manufacturers. You will see the good, the bad and the ugly, on the different manufacturers.
I also have a Taurus pt1911, and love it. Have put 1500 rounds through it with out a FTF or FTE, with all types of ammo. I trust it so much that I use it as one of my carry weapons.

I'm curious to know how many of the above people with negative statements have owned one of these pistols? Dont take into account anyones statement without experience of that model behind it. I would not own any other taurus auto except this one. Too many people will say that the taurus is junk because of its past. This pistol is a completely different critter.

It's you. The 1911 has been around so long it has no trouble recognizing someone who needs a good bonking, and it bonks those types whenever it can.

I'd take it personal if I were you.

I have 22 (yep, twenty-two) different 1911 pistols currently and have been shooting them sine 1967. I've never been bonked by a 1911 in my whole life.

If the Taurus were a Series 70 type, I'd have bought it. I bought a RIA Tactical instead. 500 and counting, zero malf. $450 shipped w/ options such as beavertail safety & novak style front and rear sights (which I changed, but because they came with the cuts, it was easy. Not so with the standard GI model)

Shoots 3" @ 25 yards freestyle.

The trigger isn't gritty. It has a barely noticable creep (have to go REAL slow to feel it), and has just a little bit of up and down play.
