I just bought a Remington 700 that recently arrived new in box at my local gun shop. It is a stainless Remington 700 with a 24 inch heavy barrel in .308. The stock looks to be similar to what was on a Sendero rifle I owned I a few years ago…possibly an HR Precision? Barrel is 24 inches, stainless unfluted and free floated. The rifle is not specially marked in any way but the factory sticker on the box (that has the serial number etc.) says… Remington 700 Stainless Special 5-R MilSpec Barrel. I suppose I could call Remington but I would rather find out any thoughts or opinions (good or bad) folks on this Forum might be willing to offer first. Also, I would greatly appreciate knowing what a 5-R MilSpec barrel actually is. Thanks! Art G.

Do a search on www.snipershide.com and you'll find a wealth of info on that particular rifle. Bottom line is that it uses a 1 in 11.2" twist with 5 grooves which are 'polygonal' or rounded in nature. I believe they are hammer forged and are basically the same as the much-ballyhooed "Rock" 5R barrels. HTH

It is a terrible barrel and rifle, I will take it off your hands to save you the embarassment at the range.

They are barrel overruns that were originally destined for Military M-24 rifle use I am pretty sure.

You can go to www.remingtonle.com and learn a little about them there.

Supposed to be TOP-DRAWER for Remmy....

Good find.

Ditto WalkerTexasRanger. You'd better go out and buy that sucker.

5R is a special rifling developed originally by the Russians. It displaces less metal and retains higher velocity. Remington copied it and was still testing variations of it to see what works best with what. They're accumulating data but the Rooskies are years ahead of them.

I'll bet you got a great shooting rifle. Let us know how it shoots once you try it out.

They had some available locally at a chain of stores named Turner's Outdoorsman recently for just under $900......too rich for me:( .

They're about the same quality as the non 5R 700's. Generally, they're good rifles, but these barrels are not anything like the Mike Rock 5R barrels. The Rocks have much better finished bores and should clean easier and give slightly higher velocities do to the better finish.

Accuracy reports from those who own this rifle appears to be on par with other Remington 700s of the same variety.

Remington 700 Stainless w/Special 5-R MilSpec

Shot my new Remington 700 Stainless with Special 5-R MilSpec .308 barrel today and so far so good. I don't handload so I just shot what I had available. 100 yards off the bench using 165 gr. Federal Premium BTSP hunting ammo resulted a group of all three holes overlapping. 150 gr. Hornady BTSP hunting ammo was not so agreeable to the rifle and the three shot group opened up to slightly larger than the size of a dime. Did not have time to shoot a lot... so five shot groups will have to wait until another time when I can acquire and utilize some 168 gr. match grade ammo. Also, I had no copper fouling problems as the barrel came clean with just a few passes using a patch and Butch's Bore Shine (breech to muzzle passes only and used a bore guide...No brush needed). So far I am pleased with the rifle and feel it was $825 (plus tax) well spent. Art G.

I just got mine shooting last weekend and did a write up look here:

http://www.pistolsmith.com/viewtopic.php?t=22512&highlight=

I have read the snipershide write ups and its a mixed bag. To date I haven't been able to get any real facts on these rifles. I know they were very limited production, but as to whether this was an overrun of M24 barrels, semi finished overuns, or out of spec barrels there doesn't seem to be any credible source of information, all rumors. I also think that some of this is tainted by some of these floks spent almost $3000 dollars on a rifle and you can't be getting that kind of performance for 25% of what I spent. These rifles aren't a M40A1 there are a lot of quality differences between the GA Precision rifles and a stock Remington, better stock, better quality barrel, better bottom metal. But bang for the your buck, if mine is representative of these rifles you are getting a lot of accuracy for a lot less money. If you want to fiddle with it send it to GA Precision, his actions cost around $500 ( pretty straight Brownells price, no critisim ) so you will have no more than $300 out if you want him to full boat this rifle up to his "Rock" rifle. But I would strongly suggest you spend some range time with it first, your list of improvements might get a lot shorter if you do.

I had a laundry list of improvements ready for mine before I shot it, that right now is been trimmed down to trigger work, new scope and rings/mounts. I also am considering restocking it, but I got to tell you when I get something that shoots like my rifle does I am very leary of fiddling with it, and changing things run the risk of decreasing accuracy not improving it.

I know what I have and my results with this rifle are impressive. Is this a Boots Obeymeyer barrel, heck no, but the cost of the rifle is within $200.00 of getting a Obermeyer barrel and having it installed.

Look around on price I got mine for $799.00, although Tuners did have these on sale at around $860 on sale. Incidently the write up stuff of the Remington LE sight is 'NOT" this rifle, don't fool yourself this is not an LE version, it has a J-Lock, and although Remington obviously borrowed something from the M-24 rifles when they made these, they are not the same rifle. These are a "C" code rifle so they came out of the custom shop, I am not broadcasting these are full custom rifles but that prefix is a custom shop rifle of some sort. Until I find out differently my guess is Remington had an overrun of several hundred 5-R barrels gave them to the custom shop who satin finished them in stainless and installed them on 700 actions. When my action was checked by my smith with blueing he said I was getting about 98% contact on the lugs, the barrel throat I haven't checked. I am sure of this number cause I was looking to buy another new Remington from him and had him check the action, and he said the the other rifle was only about 90% and not near as good as the
5-R rifle. If somebody does find a write up on these please post the link as I for one would like the information on these, I will do the same, but my smith has even called Remington on these and there doesn't seem to be much information, even as to production numbers.

I am also impressed with this rifle.

I bought mine last year at my local Gun shop, I was there looking to order a Remington PSS, but the owner asked if I have heard of the M24 , I say yep and he informsed me of the 5r milspec , I say order it, The rifle with tax ect.. all for $680.00, So I say order me the Springfield Gov. scope, one piece burris base and xtra high leopold rings.

I have only put about 16 rounds through the remmy , I didn't measure the groupings (3 round groups ) But I will say I could cover them with a quarter, I am sure after I do my part and adjust the trigger , I can make a very nice ragged hole.

I did hear somewhere that there were only 300 of these produced, but not confirmed, these rifles are very hard to find info on, but so far everyone that has done any writing on them seems to be impressed.

The federal match ammo, 175 grain seems to be what this baby likes, I did mostly shoot the hornady 168 grain, but I am most certainly going to do some load work with this one.

These are a "C" code rifle so they came out of the custom shop

That is a mistake on my part, the code is a prefix "2" which is custom shop item, the manufacturers code on this rifle is: 29663.

One last item, without checking the lands and grooves on the rifle, when its out of the box there are no distinguishing marks on the rifle. No Milspec markings, or other clues, it has the same Remington 700 rollmarks as the other rifles. There might be something under the stock, I didn't pull it apart to check, but it didn't look like there was any other markings. There is a proof mark but it is the same as other 700's. I think the clue besides checking the 5 lands, is look at the barrel which is in a satin stainless ( the others are black ), and it is only 24" not 26" like the VS and Police versions.
The boxes are plainly labeled: 700 Stainless Special 5-R Milspec Barrel.

Sorry for the mixup.
