Remington 700 milspec

I have recently aquired a Remington 700, on the box it states

Remington 700 Stainless Special .308 5-R Milspec Barrel

I orignally went to the gun store to order a PSS but ended up ordering this.

I was told it was a civilian version of the M24 sniper rifle, but other than that I can't find alot of info on this particular model.

I know that the 5-R rifling is supposed to improve accuracy, but I would like to find as much info on this type of rifle as posible. I am sure one of you GURU'S has something more to tell.

Try going here www.snipershide.com you should be able to get some info on it there,from what I recall its just a standard 700 with a remy 5r barrel and i dont believe it the same as a Mike Rock barrel.Go shoot it and gives us some feed back on it.

The 5R barrel was copied from the Russians. It's the same as what Remington provides for the SR-25 rifle. The only thing that could be better is if the barrel was left unchambered and your custom gunsmith chambered to your specs.

This link will get you started. I have the same rifle and it is a shooter. I believe the army buys these for their marksmanship program but not sure.

Thanks guys, that is more info than I had. But anyone with more info such as when were these particular rifles produced and if there were limited numbers.

Hey 308 , what barrrel proofs are on yours?

Mine has on the left side a very small kx or xx, and on the right side it has REP (incircled) with something else beside that and another stamping just below the stock line.
Interested in knowing the repersentation of these.

M24 ID

The REP is the factory proof mark.

M24s will be marked with the number of the shooter (normally two digits) that test fired the rifle forward of the REP and an M in a circle denoting a second Magnafluxing. There should be a triangle between the cirlcled M and the receiver ring denoting the 1st Magnufluxing.

The SN will have a U.S. over it and there should be a date code and the assemblers initials on the left side of the barrel.

My understanding from the dealer I got mine from is that Reminton runs these a couple of times a year and produces a few for the civilian market. They are not a limited edition in the strictest sense. I will have to look at my proof marks and get back to you.

The military sniper rifle has had a lot more custom work done on it, at great expense, than simply having the barrel you mentioned attached to the receiver.

Here's what Remington had to say :


Thank you for your inquiry. The Model 700 5-R was a special run that we did in 2001. The 5-R rifling is the same type of rifling used on the M-24 SWS rifle. There are 5 lands opposed to the normal 6 lands. The lands are tapered at 110 degrees. This leads to less bullet deformation for greater accuracy. Rate of twist is 1 in 11.24". We do not have production numbers. The barrel stampings are just proof marks from production & do not mean anything special.


So it seems they don't put these out every year, hummm
