I'm thinking of buying a model 700 Remington .308 20 inch barrel stainless with the 5-R rifling. Anyone had any dealings with this particular set up? Are they worth the money?

My gunsmith, who also is a competetive shooter owns one. He thinks quite highly of it. The 5-R's come with 24" barrels unless I'm badly mistaken. The LTR and the SPS Tactical are offered with a 20" barrel. Possibly others.

I've owned one...the 5R shoots well for a factory rifle, but some folks online seem to think they are some magical rifle. I believe they run over $1k+ these days and I think you can do better for the same price.

You can do more with a Savage for less money.

Those 5Rs shoot as well as anything else I've seen, but as mentioned, people seem to believe that they are something magical. For a bit more than the cost of a factory rifle with a 5r barrel, you can have a semi custom rifle built.
