I've been going to gun shows in Houston for about ten years, mostly at George R. Brown. They're always about the same. Occassionally you will see a new dealer. The HCGA gun shows are usually larger, but not as large as they used to be. I bought a Sig 522 at the one yesterday.

Thanks for the response. As i remember it, it was about:
40% ar/ak/rpd/psl rifles,
25% hunting (rifles/jerky/etc),
5% leather goods and assecories,
5% reloading components/live ammo
15% handguns,
5% shotguns/hd weapons
and 5% (at most) mil surp/older rifles

Is this still about accurate?
I really like to hang around the right side of Collectors Firearms and admire all the older rifles, but was disappointed at the gun show I went to at the GRB a while back because of the lack of pre-60's (my slim definition of old) rifles.

How are the prices (in general)?
If you have the time can you summarize what you saw?

Thanks for the response and any future replies.

There are 3 main shows in the Houston and Pasadena areas: The High Caliber Gun Show (at the GRB and Pasadena Convention Center), The Real Gun Show (Pasadena only), and The HGCA Show (at Reliant Park, formerly Astro Arena).

1. I would never go to The Real Gun Show again. It's total crap.

2. The High Caliber Show is mildly better, especially when held at the GRB (larger, more selections).

3. The HGCA Show is the best and, some would say largest, in Texas. I tend to agree with that. For modern firearms, there are always 4 major dealers with their price war going: AJC Sports, Bachman, Schramms (SAW), and The Gun Zone. You will also find more of other dealers that you don't see at High Caliber.
For NIB modern firearms, you cannot find them cheaper anywhere else in town 99.9% of the time, from my observation the past few years.
If you like older guns, then I think you'll like HGCA Show the best. I'm not into them, so can't tell you much price wise, but definitely there are more vendors selling old stuff there. I can tell you that many small time vendors selling used guns that are more expensive than their NIB counterparts, and they wonder why they still have them same guns show after show after show.

4. Lastly, there is also the Saxet Gun Show, held in Conroe. Went there once, and my impression is that it's a hair above The Real Gun Show, which doesn't say much.

I ve been to all of them incdlg one in Conroe. The best is the HGCA at Reliant. I got one unissued Sako M 39 for $200 otd from a private collector , this was in 2004 though. Then a nice VG Yugo M 59 SKS for $200 with mint bore (also from a private seller ). THere are more private sellers in this show and very well regulated members.

The High Caliber shows do pop up every few weeks or so. THe Brown Convention Center venue is much better in my opinion as they have more tables and space. But be ready to pay parking in downtown.

5% reloading components/live ammo

I wish. Been maybe three years since I found a decent selection of reloading stuff at any Houston area show. Although ammo quantity and selection (and prices!) has gone up post Obama.

I used to go to the Pasadena shows for reloading supplies, free parking and much shorter walk, but the component vendors started dropping out about five years ago until now there is usually only one, with prices that make buying on-line and paying the shipping and Hazmat fee worthwhile.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll definitely be checking out the HGCA show next time its around.
