I'm trying to determine if they are worth getting (for me). I looked at a Beretta Cougar and the grip was very large for my hands. It would have worked, but uncomfortably. The 92 has been in the Army for 20 yrs successfully. I wondered if the Taurus (which features Cock and Lock) is more comfortable in a medium sized hand. Thanks for any input.

The handle size of the Beretta 92 and the Taurus 92 are identical. The only difference is the location of the decocker/safety. The Beretta 92 is a great classic pistol to me. Mine has never failed in any way. I have no real experience with the Taurus version aside from putting some rounds through a friends weapon at the range. Going on fit/finish alone though I'd sway towards the Beretta every time going from what I've seen at various stores, etc.

MadMerc is right, there is no difference in grip size. I have owned two Berettas (a 92 Brigadier and M9) and I currently own a Taurus PT99 and their performance is nearly identical. I do prefer the Taurus a bit more though, do to the adjustable sights and accessory rail.

+1 for what the first two posters said. And I'll add that if the Cougar grip was too big for you, the 92 will be worse. You might look toward something smaller... like a Ruger SR9.

I have relatively small hands (I'm 5'10") and just sold my Taurus PT92FS.

I absolutely loved this pistol and probably shouldn't have sold it. I put thousands of rounds through it and had very few issues. Accuracy was bang on (pun intended) and the balance was great.

The grips are not quite as ergonomic as say a good polymer pistol, but if you're a fan of all steel, full size frames, this is one to seriously consider. It's not great as a carry weapon (9mm, full size and the weight), but as a plinker or home defence, it's a great choice.

I don't know your hand size, but I highly recommend trying one at the range before you make your decision. They are usually pretty easy to find to rent.

have a taurus 92 af -love it- carry in a fobus and you can go all day after 7 years and many round it still my go to weapon on ly thing i had to do was replace the spring about a year ago - the old one was showing its age- fantastic accuracy out to 25 yds

beware the man with only one gun

I have both. Prefer the Beretta (made in Italy) for looks, the Taurus for shooting since I hate DA/SA operation. The cocked and locked on the Taurus rocks. Very good gun and you'll have money left over to buy some ammo and extra mags.

Thanks, I'm going to find one to try out. Back when I was in the Army all we had was worn out 1911s, but fun.

BERETTA is my choice

DGRAY64,

I have been using BERETTA 92 and 96 pistols for the past 10 years. I prefer the DAO (double action only) models which avoid the double-action/single-action transition by doing away with the single-action trigger.
It shoots like a revolver and quite accurately.

So far, I have never had a BERETTA 92 or 96 jam or mis-feed on me. They are also VERY ACCURATE right out of the box.

I just ordered a 96D Brigadier in near NEW condition and a 92D police trade in from CDNN. 1-800-588-9500.
Both are double action only with the Brigadier having the heavier slide designed for the I&NS when they switched to the high velocity .40 caliber load. I will report on how they turn out.

Beretta 92

Beretta is my choice as well. The grip of the 92FS is quite big - (double stack9mm's) so be aware of that. I love mine and had the Crimson Trace Lasergrips fitted as well. Accurate as can get - depending on the human element.
If grip size is an issue, maybe you should also go try the PX4 Storm from Beretta. I held one last week and it is an awesome gun - felt totally natural in my hands. I am 6' 3" with hands to match, so grip size is not really an issue for me.

I own 2 Beretta 92's, one's a SS, my daily carry weapon, and the standard "blued" one with the "rail".
Also own the Beretta Storm in 9mm which takes the same mags, kinda like having 357 wheel guns and a lever rifle in the same cal.!!
Also have the Beretta Cougar in 380 as a "bug" gun
My only problem was feeding from after market mags, but even those problems can be "worked" out.

BERETTA just arrived

The BERETTA pistols that I ordered came in this afternoon. I picked them up and the 96D lives up to the advertising. It looks unissued.

The 92D I would rate as good to very good.

Both have very smooth double action triggers, like SMITH & WESSON used to make.

It's just my own weird little pet peeve, but why are you capitalizing the company names? It's distracting and odd...

You forgot that berettas have plastic parts after 2001, and Tarus uses different metal in the slide. I am waiting for the metal parts to be swapped out and coat my barrel. it turned a odd color after 2 boxes. Aleady replaces mag springs after those 2 boxes. Any more mags will be megcar. I only use it for target plinking. Prefer a 40 or 45 with good ammo. I have found 147 subies lacking but issue so no choice. faster rounds hit harder more shock and system trauma faster stopping.

Golden,

I just received one of the same 96D's from CDNN. Nice gun, I think I will ike it. However, it didn't come with the 3 magazines (only 1) or a manual. DId you find the same experience?

YOU just need to lighten up a tad, eh?

Probably, but that doesn't answer my question. Really, I am not trying to pick on the guy, I am just curious as to what it going on with that.

PT92 is great. I really like the frame-mounted safety/decocker. Some protest that the accuracy is so-so, but mine is fine. Also, the PT has a rail and is less expensive than the Beretta. I got mine for $399 (new, stainless).

The Taurus has the older-style Beretta 92 receiver, where the bottom of the front-strap is straight and does not flare out as it does on the current 92FS/M9. On the other hand, the back-strap on the most current 92FS (but not the M9) has a radiused cut just below the beavertail, where the grip hits the web of your strong hand. Theoretically, this should reduce the trigger reach by a tiny amount.

The grip panels on the Taurus are flat (as opposed to the Beretta's grip panels, which are radiused) so, out of the box, the Taurus feels like it has a slightly smaller grip circumference (to me, anyway.) On the other hand, the Taurus grip feels somewhat more like a 2x4.

The grip on both the Taurus and the Beretta are almost identical, however. I am not sure that the differences are enough to matter if the Beretta grip feels much to big.

I have a Taurus PT92 that I enjoy better than the Beretta M9 I shot in the Corps. The slide seems shorter on the PT92 and won't bite my hand as the M9did.

Guapo

Same as you. Just 1 mag, but the gun is in very good to excellent condition.

OH, I CAPITALIZE NAMES BECAUSE I FIND IT MAKES THEM EASIER TO READ.

I have a Beretta 92FS and have medium hands. I have never been able to shoot this gun accurately because it doesn't fit my hands right.
