I saw a comparison in American Handgunner between the High Standard 1911 and the Springfield Armory Mil Spec 1911-A1. Has anyone seen/handled/purchased/fired the High Standard? I liked the looks of the High Standard, flat mainspring housing, lowered/flared ejection port. The article said these are priced under $400, but I haven't actually seen one for sale anywhere.

I understand the Taurus has lots of features for the money, but I have a SA tuned for IPSC, and a SA "loaded" Champion (4" barrel). So I'm sort of looking for a basic 1911.

Thanks,

I have seen the High Standard in a gun shop next to a Rock Island and they are the exact same gun. The only differance I could see was the checkering on the grips of the High Standard. They are also both marked made in the Philippines. Rock Island owners seem to like their guns so the High Standard should be just as good but it costs more than the Rock Island.

The HS looks and feels much better than the RIA IMHO.

They are priced within 50 bucks of each other, and I think it would be a great "basic" 1911.

Funny how a different roll mark on the side of the same gun will make it seem better. :) Around here I can get a HS .45 for around $400. I had one (my first 1911) I sold it to buy a RIA officers Model. It's a decent entry level 1911.

Different roll mark, different finish, a bit more finishing work/metal work.

I just sold the one we had, so I cant take pictures of the two next to each other. Perhaps someone that has both can do that for ya.
