Has anyone here had an experience purchasing an E. R. Shaw Mark VII Custom Bolt Action Rifle? I happened to drive by their manufacturing facility and stopped by for a minute walking out with a catalog that has the "buy juices" flowing. I'd like to hear from an owner though.

It would appear they have a good relationship with Savage and they said a custom gun starts at 700.00. I didn't have a lot of time to stay but would like to go back and see the shop and talk more seriously about a custom build and compare their price with Savage's more accurate models.

About 20-25 years ago they rebuilt a military Mauser 98 action for me. They stripped it, put on a sporter barrel, new bolt handle, drilled for bases, polished it up in general and reblued it. I was very happy with the results. After 15 years I swapped it to a friend who still has it.

But that was not buying a complete rifle and it was a long time ago.

I have been looking at them and pondering for a while, myself.

The rifle I wanted was $940 (Not bad at all) but a 14 month wait (Not good.)

They also require a 50% (IIRC) up front deposit in addition to the 14 month wait. I'm poor enough that I can't afford to spend that much for over a year with nothing to show for it.

Really great idea, but it's a shame they can't crank em out faster.

Pick a good cartridge that will keep its value like say a .257 Roberts (all rifles in that caliber command a premium on GB :)) and order it. It'll take a while, but in the end you'll have a pretty legendary rifle that will retain its value forever. There just are not that many out there floating around :)

Never had one, but I sure am fond of that company name!! :D I submitted my requirements for what a custom build would cost me. <<pause>> I'm wondering if they'll think I'm being a smart-"butt" when they read the name on the e-mail. I've had a lot of people ask me over the years if I were the company's owner...nope.

Geno <<AKA: E.R. Shaw>> :D

Yes. I just got mine a year ago. I got it in 300 Win mag in stainless gray laminent. I love the thing. I haven't hunted with it yet, but am looking forward to it. It took about 15 months. The only thing I'd change, it probably the caliber. In hindsight I'd probably got with a 270 Weatherby mag.

I've spoken to them about a rifle. I could live with the cost & the wait. The refusal to put on iron sights was the deal breaker for me.

I have a Savage 110 in 338/06 with a ER Shaw barrel. This rifle was born a 30-06. Savage barrels are pretty easy to change for a gunsmith and not out of the realm for an end user with reasonably good mechanic skills.

Accuracy is very good, but not on the same level with the high end custom barrel guys like Shilen and Hart (so I've read), but the price reflects that.

Given the choice to do it all over again, I still would not buy an entire rifle from ER Shaw, but would certainly buy another barrel from them. Pricing is more than fair and groups are sub MOA.

Not sure to many would look at a shaw barrel as a top flight barrel and what action is that that shaw use's?? A savage.

You get what you pay for. It's not being compared to a $2,000 rig. It's about the price of a factory Remington 700.

Apples to oranges.

I have experience with two Shaw barrels so far and would have one of those rifles in a heartbeat if I had the money. Both barrels are centerfire one is a 788 in 243 the other a 16" HBAR ar in 223 and both are half inch for 5 shots at 100 yards with factory Hornady ammo. I would call that top of the line!

A buddy has one at the range. It's a .308. He was shooting 1/2 inch groups with handloads, and he isn't that good of a shot! Nice rig. Long wait.
