Anyone have issues with a Kel Tec PF9?

I'm getting a PF9 hard chrome in tonight on a trade....I'm not sure what I want to do with it. I could use a small flat EDC but I'm not sure the PF is the one to go with for me.

I really wanted to like mine, but after problems with FTX (Failure to Extract - I'm trying to get this changed from FTE to avoid confusion with 'Failure to Eject' - FTF is next), I sent it in to Kel-Tec. They did a 'Fluff and Buff' and changed the extractor spring - which I had already done. Thought the FTX's were somewhat reduced, they still occured.

Rather than go through the whole 'ship it back, pour hundreds of rounds through it again to test it out' cycle again, I decided to cut my losses and get rid of it. I couldn't trust. I probably won't buy another Kel-Tec.

I have the PF9 in hand. It has a smoother trigger and is smaller and lighter than I expected(or remember form years ago). It also appears to be of decent quality. I've decided to give it a chance, but only one.....I'm not getting into the back and forth shipping game over a $250 gun.

I hope it works well for you. I bought one in 2007 after they were first released. I still carry it more than my other CCW guns because of its size and concealibility. I have several thousand rounds through it with no issues. The trigger has improved over the years and I bought it hard coated so I have had no rust issues. Mine has been reliable and durable and I would replace it if anything happened to it. KT was first to market with a small, concealable and affordable 9mm and it has taken more than a few years for other companies to develop and manufacture something to compete in the market.

I got out with the PF9 today and put ~150 rounds through, a mix of WWB, Federal, Speer FMJ and Golden Sabers. Function was 100%, its really a good shooting pistol. I shot distances from 7 to 12 yards and was able to keep all the shots in 2 1/2 to 3" slow fire and easily "on paper" rapid firing.

thought I'd add a pic :)

Kel tec sent me a new barrel for mine, so I put it in and took it to the range today. I shot 60 rounds through it with no problems at all. So far so good. If it will behave this way, I will trust it for daily carry.

Initially, mine had barrel issues. The rifling was marred after shooting about 150 or so rounds out of it. I think I posted pics of it here. Kel-tec sent me a new barrel and since then it's been flawless. I've shot over 1,000 rounds thru it without a hiccup. A fun shooting, comfortable packing pistol that is perfect for summer carry in a hot Arizona climate.

I bought a brand new PF9 in early 2011 after getting a decent deal at my LGS. With range test firing it had issues off the bat.

The factory magazine when fully loaded would not chamber reliably into the pistol. Unfortunately it only came with one magazine so i could not test this issue with another magazine, and no other store had one in stock.

I had double feed and stove-pipe issues using WWB and Federal ammo. I learned from KTforums that the feed ramp needs to be polished. The ejecting issues were bothersome too.

The trigger pull is long, which is normal for a pistol in this class. this makes double taps kind of hard since you have to let the trigger reset all the way for the next shot. There is also very little room for your finger inside the trigger guard, which can be a problem for those with larger fingers.

Sometimes I would accidentally press the mag release, partially ejecting the mag by a few mm but not drop the mag. This can be a personal issue, but I've never had this issue with any of my pistols (M&P, XD, 709/740, Glock).

If you are lucky enough to get a working and reliable one, then it is a great lightweight pistol. I carrried mine for about a month before selling it. I really wanted to like the PF9, but the issues prevented me from doing so.

I've only got around ~150 rds through mine(20+P) but no issues thus far although it did shake the belt clip loose.

I love the idea of this gun in concept, but given its price point I don't entirely trust it.

I put a couple boxes of range ammo through mine with no problems, then one day it turned into the jam-o-matic from Hell. I took it a part and cleaned and lubed it, tried it again. Same thing.

I looked at my loads and they were loaded to the minumum, I loaded some to mid-range and the problem went away.

But it is hard on my hand with heavier loads, it is my daily carry gun again now.

Does anyone make lighter slide return springs for them for shooting light loads or is it more a weight problem with the slide being to light because of it's size?
