Hi guys. So, does anyone have the new Colt Python? I'm thinking of picking up a 4" model, but have heard everything from it being a hunk of junk box of rocks to it being the best thing since sliced bread.... my main concern is that in ever review I have seen or read, the reviewers rave about the double action trigger. Hardly anyone speaks about the single action trigger. My 1960s vintage Python's single action is right around 3lbs... the new one is closer to 5... not exactly a "target trigger". I almost never shoot my revolvers in double action. In fact, if I'm shooting more than 2 rounds in a row double action, I'm probably being charged by a bear!

So, how is the new gun?

Thanks!!!

I have a new 6" Python. I like it. It shoots well. I only have a couple hundred rounds through it so far.

I have not measured the trigger pull but it is not alot different than my various S&W N and L frame revolvers.

Thanks man. You'll have to pardon my ignorance, but I'm not really a S&W guy. The only Smith I have more than a box of rounds through is the 686. That trigger was good, but no where close to my Python. Is that what you are referring to?

I have no experience with the early Pythons but they have a reputation of having an excellent trigger.

I have a number of S&W revolvers, some from the early 1970's to 1990's, some recent manufacture. S&W triggers tend to get better with use.

There are some that feel the 1980s vintage S&W L-frame, such as the Model 686, triggers were better than the similar vintage Python.

I can't tell much difference between my new Python from my S&W revolvers.

I can tell the difference between rifle triggers. I guess my fingers are not calibrated for revolver triggers.

I've seen them for 1599 lately in stock. Lol. Can't say the same for the Anaconda. I'll pick one of those up when I see one that isn't inflated. I don't own a post CZ Colt yet

As far as triggers they are good. I agree that old smith and colt are comparable at least in that regard. My two x frames have triggers as good as any old smith or colt I've used. My other newer Smiths (post 2000 or so k and n frames) are just ok. Better than a good Ruger.. but not great by any stretch.

Dumbhunter,

You indicate you're a single action
shooter. Since you apparently have
a strong itch for the Python and
probably the wherewithal buy one.
The U-shaped mainspring allows
for easier, less effort SA cocking
than on a Smith.

"hunk of junk box or rocks?" Dunno where you've seen this. Even the reviewers that got an early production model with issues (that appear to have since been remedied by Colt a while back) still managed to spotlight the positive features. IMO, this is a truly great revolver. And yes, the DA trigger is superb.

The single action trigger is just fine. As most dedicated revolver shooters tend to far more DA shooting, the SA pull is not talked about nearly as much -- but, I have no complaints. I didn't buy this gun to shoot it in single action.

not willing to pay over MSRP of 1495.00.
Eh, just gotta be patient -- they're out there. Locally, our Sportsman's Warehouse stores still sell 'em (when they get them in) at MSRP (and if you're eligible for their military discount - 5% - even better).

I've got two of the new Python's. (I had three but sold one of them.) Both of mine are 4" guns. My wife wanted one of "her own." They both just beg to be fired in double action. I can't tell you what the actual weight is, I can tell you it's very nice. As nice as a good Smith and Wesson? Darned if I know. I'm sort of a Ludlite when it comes to triggers. They're either good or bad. These are very good. I didn't notice anything wrong with the S/A but I admit I haven't used it much.

The gun I sold was a 6" Model, one of the very first. I had a slight problem with it after about 800 rounds of mostly magnum ammo. The sideplate screws worked loose and the gun started to bind up. Fortunately I noticed it, and was able to simply tighten them up with a screwdriver and was back in business in a few seconds. They never came loose again, and the two 4" guns have never had the "problem" if you want to call it that. I sold it simply because I have a thing for 4" revolvers, and once I got my hands on a 4" one, the 6" just took up space in the safe.

About the only thing I'd want different is I'd like to have a Royal Blue version, but then I suspect most of us would like that too.

I paid $MSRP for two of mine. The last one was about $100 more IIRC. I still see them at MSRP at Sportsman's Warehouse but you had better be ready to hit the "but it now" button if you see one. They go that quickly. If you don't have a SW near you I'm pretty sure they will ship to your FFL. I just drove to a Sportsmans Warehouse in state to pick mine up. Took about a week, counting a couple of days delay for a broke down truck.

My wife's.

I have to look at the S/N's to tell them apart. There is a slight difference in the grips too.

Speaking of the grips. A lot of people weap, moan, and gnash their teeth over the "plywood" grips. Well, the old grips might have been "prettier" but the new ones are about the most comfortable revolver grips I've used. Comfortable, and I like the more muted color against the "white" stainless steel.

No they are not the factory grips, they are aftermarket Deer Hollow Grips the finest aftermarket grips and closest to the original grips from Colt.
They look great!
The '20 Python "Super Walnut" grips I just got for my vintage Trooper still appear to be a laminate type, but are a bit darker than those on Cajunbass' guns-

I gotta say, I dont mind they "greyscale" look against against stainless, but prefer the darker brown on blued guns.

I like the darker wood on blue guns also. The ones I really like are the Altamont ones with the inlaid "gold" Rampant Colt. Those look great. The problem is I don't dislike the ones on the gun, so I haven't been able to talk myself into buying aftermarket ones.

Do mean Altamont grips like these??
