Anyone hunting with black powder this fall?

i'll hunt with this Navy Arms rifle. The barrel was recently bored out and rifled to .54 caliber by Mr. Hoyt, an outstanding gunsmith. Distance is 50 yards. The small holes were previously made by a not so accurate .22 magnum.

After firing two sighting in shots i fired the four shot group.

Aiming point was six o'clock on the red bullseye. The group is about 3.5" too high: The rear sight is at it's lowest limit. Now i must make a new higher front sight.

On deer at 50 yards, I would not bother. Kentucky windage should get you close enough. I will be hunting with a zouave that hits 6 inches high at 50 yards, but small groups. Don't want to mess with the sights, so I will just aim a bit low.

3.5 above point of aim, or? I would think 3.5" high at 50 yards would be just right for a good point blank range of a little over 100 yards. ? 3" high at 50 is where almost all my rifles are sighted.

Is Hoyt still in business? I have a "Zouave" I'd like to take out to .62" and rifled for round-ball. Been meaning to ask him about that for years.

Thank you. Yeah, I just need to do it. That rifle would be so cool in .62 caliber (or bigger if he'd do it) and rifled for round ball. Too cool.

Dang. Speaking of the Jeager, since it's now time to seriously hunt with it I thought I'd better go out back, tack the paper plate up at 100 yards, and take a shot. PINWHEEL! Yep, I'm happy. That is certainly the load she likes, 20 grains of Goex 1fg by the touch-hole, 90 grains of Swiss 2fg on top of that, a pure bee's wax soaked felt wad over the powder, and a wonder wad on top of that. .023" tick-patch lubed with "Wonder" lube, and a .595" ball.

Didn't want to ruin my pinwheel by shooting a group. And, I'm pretty sure she ("Brown Rosie, Rose of Alabama") she'll hit what I'm aiming at if I do my part. I might miss, but the rifle won't!
