Saw an ad in the paper that Big 5 was selling Remmington UMC 9mm ammo for $12.99 for 50. Anyone know anything good/bad about the ammo? With WWB going up around $17-$18 for 50 rounds, I thought I might get some.

It's about like any other target ammo. I find UMC to be a little lighter in recoil than the others, at least the 9mm. Some people say it's dirty, but I can never tell and I always clean my guns after shooting anyway. Too bad $12.99 is considered a sale price on 9mm nowadays! You can still get it cheaper online if you're willing to buy it in bulk.

This is the "generic" FMJ in the yellow boxes, right? I've shot a fair amount of it in 9mm and .45 Auto and some .223, never any problems. The .223 stank of ammonia after being fired.

UMC ammo seems less 'dirty' than WWB. I can really tell on a HK P7, b/c of what comes out of the gas piston area.

WWB seems to be the worst when it comes to residue, but they seem to be the best looking (most consistent). CCI Blazer Brass is the cleanest, but worst looking (most defects/least accurate).

I've seen this stuff at Dick's for around 10-12 bucks a box lately. I would buy some if I didn't have a surplus of WWB around. I don't know if you have one nearby, but if so I'd check them out.

Depends on your pistol and the lot of ammo. My Glock hated the last batch I had; it would choke once every 50-100 rounds, randomly, usually with the case half-extracted. It IS lighter in the power department compared to Winchester White Box.

As for cleanliness, I'd rate all the "range" ammo about the same, with CCI Blazer Brass having maybe, just maybe, a slight edge in cleanliness and Wolf steel definitely being the dirtiest. And my Glock seems to shoot the same with all of it, but then about the best I can do is shoot 4" at 25 yards offhand on any given day, and all of the ammo seems to be at least that good.

I tried UMC once. Just once. This is the only ammunition that I've ever shied away from, and it's a shame because it's a pretty decent deal. 3 rounds in I stopped because it was sparking out of the muzzle of my Ruger. I stripped it down on the spot to make sure that there wasn't something in the barrel causing it and as soon as I had the slide off, my hands turned black. I'm willing to call it a freak bad box getting past QC, but after the cleaning that I had to put to that firearm after only 3 rounds (not to mention the pyrotechnics) I decided not to chance it.

Did I just end up with the 1 in 1,000 that's always off?

My CZ75 PCR does not like Remington UMC. I get numerous failure to feed problems with it. I don't think that the casing was crimped properly at the factory.

Before the price increases I bought quite a bit of the green box UMC 9MM and .45 ACP at Dicks last year. No problems in my Ruger autos or RIA 1911. Also shoot a bit in my BH convertible using the ACP cylinder. Worked just fine in MY guns. Never a misfire or bauble of any kind. I've even used it in my carry gun at times.

My P99AS (9mm) doesn't like WWB or Blazer Brass but loves the Green Box UMC. 100 rounds today went where I wanted and the gun cleaning afterwards was easy. Matter of fact, all my toys like it. So do I.

It's on sale now at $19.96/100 at Dicks.

I've got a couple boxes of the Remington UMC 9mm in the green box, from Walmart for $10.35 50 round box, its been good for me.

I Wouldn't Carry It

Two Pistol Packer at www.ktog.org has done extensive "wetpack" testing of various 9mm Luger rounds. The Rem/UMC HPs simply didn't expand. Both he and the well respected Stephen A. Camp feel the Winchester "white box" is a much better choice.

If you go to hipowersandhandguns.com or handgunsandammo.com you will find links to Camp's research on the WWB. Many believe the "Personal Protection" or "white box" JHPs are Silvertips w/o the nickel plating that gives them their silver color.

I use the UMC for plinking....if you watch the newspaper ads, you will see the 250 rd pack go on sale occasionally at The Academy for $45. I bought some at that price about 3 weeks ago.

Never had a problem with UMC FMJ in any caliber or mm, and its nowhere near as dirty as that test ammo the factory uses right before they send you your beautiful gun full of crud from ammo you would never shoot yourself!...but I digress.

Then again as someone also said, "I would never carry it", neither would I. Range requires FMJ so thats why I shoot UMC if thats what I got, carry is JHPs, ones with cool names too! Hydras, Sabers, Dot!...Dot?! ;)

No problems on any of my guns, but I don't see any reason to pay that $$ when you can buy WWB of 100 rounds at Wal-Mart for $18.

My experience has been that it's dirty but serviceable.

I had a .40 once that choked on UMC ammo virtually every magazine. Worked well with everything else. Turns out that this particular design had a rather heavy recoil spring from the factory and the UMC was underpowered. Winchester USA gave me some grief as well, but upper end handloads worked great.

Have bought some 250rnd packs for approximately $32 (I think). Love the price, unfortunately they are they are the only thing that I've seen make my cz PCR hiccup. They are a wee bit too light for her.
