Plan on shooting a brown bear this spring/summer and would like to use my .300 Wby. but can't find any .308 solids. I always shoot to break bone on a Brown and would like to use something besides my .375.
Woodleigh, if you can find some.

Those handgun solids are legal?
Never really thought about it, I guess it's worth looking into if you're buying some. I don't see such a mainstream seller getting away with it if it were illegal. Here's a clip from a quick Google search, not sure what beryllium copper is:
"The definition of ap ammo is at 18 USC 921(a)(17):*
"(B) The term `armor piercing ammunition' means-*
(i) a projectile or projectile core which may be used in a handgun and*
which is constructed entirely (excluding the presence of traces of other*
substances) from one or a combination of tungsten alloys, steel, iron, brass,*
bronze, beryllium copper, or depleted uranium; or*
(ii) a full jacketed projectile larger than .22 caliber designed and*
intended for use in a handgun and whose jacket has a weight of more than 25*
percent of the total weight of the projectile."
There have been multiple studies that reached the same conclusion. A 220 gr Nosler Partition fired from a 30-06 or 300 WM out penetrated almost everything short of 375 magnum. That includes most 338 WM loads.
The depth of penetration was a tie between the 2 in several studies although it shows the slower 30-06 with a slight advantage here.
Here is a link, you'll have to scroll about 1/2 way through to get to the 30 calibers. This is a compilation of data from multiple sources over several years. Some of this is data from Finn Agaards work. I've seen some results of his testing in Africa in print, but don't have a link to it on the net.

While not exactly the same results the Alaska F&G study came to similar conclusions. Note that in their study they were primarily interested in bear defense. The 300 WBY mag out penetrated 30-06 by a small margin, but they ranked it lower based on greater recoil.
