Hey guys,

First post on thehighroad. I'm a member of CanadianGunNutz, though (for those of you who know it).

I have a project in mind that only you fine Americans can help me with. Many of you have access to MP5s, whereas Canadians can only dream of such things.

I am going to attempt to make a Ruger 10/22 conversion into an MP5-like setup. I will keep the same receiver, and same trigger group, but just "dress it up" as an MP5 much as possible.

Where do you come in? I need someone who has an MP5 (with a full stock, preferrably, but without is okay also) to take pictures of their MP5 against some kind of grid (which will give me dimensions).

An example of a great grid would be a rifle sighting target with 1" squares.

Some basic requirements:
  • try to line up the firearm with the grid as much as possible
  • try to take the picture looking directly on the firearm, so as to provide good perspective/angle against the grid
  • try to take the photo in as much detail as possible

I know this is asking for a pretty big favor, considering I'm a newb on this forum, but I think I've got a really cool project on my hands, now, and I'd like to explore this possibility.

Besides, I'll post pics ;)

Actually, your best bet may be to acquire an inexpensive airsoft version. Many of them are pretty close on dimensions. That would give you a model you could work from directly. I'm afraid I don't know them well enough to recommend one, but I'm sure some of the airsoft fans might be able to help.

Jorg, see that's what I was thinking of doing originally, but I looked all over town and could not find anything. We have the airsoft mp5's but they're 1/2 scale at best, and they don't seem to be very faithful replicas.

You're right though: I've seen some awesome replicas online, but I cannot buy one here, which is why I thought about doing it this way.

If the airsoft way is a no-go, and you can't import the kits to make your 10/22 into an EBR... well, I guess you could buy the real HK furniture, and find a way to get that onto your 10/22, but I really can't think of any way to do this without custom machining a whole lot of parts.

Crunker, I have experience with molding and forming fiberglass, so I think that is the route that I'll take, especially since HK furniture is basically unattainable in Canada.

It would be nice, however, if I could just make a negative mold of an Airsoft MP5 and a casting of my Ruger 10/22 receiver and then just bed the stock and action into the newly cast one piece (or two piece) stock.

At that point I'd have to do the detail work such as markings, painting, carving, etc, but it'd be very efficient.

The gun that will very shortly become the object of your lust is called the GSG-5.

It's an almost exact replica of an MP5, but chambered in .22 LR. I've handled one but not shot it. My overall impression of fit and finish is favorable.

Is the GSG-5 legal in Canada? Because if it is, you'd probably want to look into that before taking this very time-consuming endeavor.
But then, where's the fun in that? :)

Oh I'm well aware of the GSG-5 but it is indeed prohibited in Canada :(

I'm trying to achieve the same end, though, except semi-auto.

If you can get a GSG-5, that would probably be your best bet. If not, and you can make a fiberglass mold, maybe you should consider getting a full-size bluegun from which you could make a mold and form some sort of shell around the 10-22.

Blueguns... now there's a brilliant Idea...

I'll look into that....

Thank you :)

Okay, not very cost effective unfortunately. I'm seeing costs of $180+shipping online... that's a bit excessive. I think I'll just keep looking for pictures and airsoft if I can find it.

GSG-5 is semi-auto. That doesn't have any impact on its legality at all though does it?

If you are asking for a full stock MP5, I am guessing you mean the A4 version of it, so I am going to direct you to this site: www.airsplat.com or better yet, here: http://www.airsplat.com/Items/ERM-JG-M5A4-070.htm It's going to be about $100 or so with shipping and it is a very good replica of it. I have one and have fitted it with real steel MP5 parts (surefire light fore-end) so it has to be kind of close in order to work.
