Anyone own the Springfield Armory double stack 1911?

A buddy of mine has one. I gave it to him NIB as a gift for all the time he put into building my shed. He always wanted that specific one, why I'll never know.

It seemed to be inline with every other stock 1911 I've ever seen, shot, or heard of. It went bang almost every time with decent ammo and even less with crap ammo. It REALLY didn't like Sellier & Bellot. We had a ton of stovepipes and rounds seating out of battery with that brand. The mags are finicky, the one that came with it works, the extra one ordered from Springfield needed the feed lips played with before it would feed properly.

He's put a different hammer, safety, sights and trigger into it and they all went in fine with a little gunsmith work.

It shoots very accurately and nice tight groups even with the crappy GI sights.

The only bad part about it that I have seen so far is that they only come with one magazine and it wasn't easy finding more for it. He ended up getting one from SA at the tune of $45.

It also has the key lock built into the gun which some people don't like. It's never gotten in the way or stopped anything and can be removed with the proper parts, but it doesn't phase him.

I've the Para P12 clone Micro. Suffers light primer hits and has relability issues common to guns using Para double stack magazines.

--wally.

I have one of their high capacity Ultra compacts. It has a ported barrel and goes bang every time. The only downside would be the lack of aftermarket grips. The grips are super thin because of the double stacked mags and I just haven't been able to find any replacements.

My brother in law bought one (against my advise). Frame made in Brazil.

He's had a lot of problem with it. FTE, FTF, and when it does run your shooting arm is covered in shavings and powder as if you've been running bullets through a grinder.

I know it's only 1 gun, but it's not a good sign in my mind. If you want a large cap .45 look at a Glock.

I have one of the loaded models. Love mine. It did make one trip back to SA for some fine tuning. After I had several hundred rounds through it it still had stove pipes. One call and they gave me a fedex number. It was gone for about 3 weeks or so. Came back no problems since.

As far as mags go the Para Ord ones work fine.
