I have a Sig P220 (blue), that has the factory hard plastic grips. They are slick as paper. I put 3M anti-skid tape on the front strap and it made a BIG difference. It just needs more grip on the backstrap now.

Has anyone put anti-skid tape on the backstrap of a Sig, before? I can't recall seeing any pictures of one. I've tried Hogue rubber grips and didn't like them. I don't want to get wood grips, because they thicken the grip.

Sure - I suppose I could just try it and get it over with. I'm also hoping for some alternatives. I wonder about scuffing up the back strap a bit, but what it the best way? I don't want it to look like it was dragged behind a car. A fine rasp and lightly drag it? Course sandpaper? A five-o'clock shadow?

Thanks for any advice.

Haven't tried it but had to add my two cents worth since I got a new 220 about two months ago and faced the same problem. It's amazing, isn't it, that one of the worlds finest firearms comes with grips that might as well be made of teflon for the amount of grip they provide? Way too slick for a proper grip - at least in my hands. I couldn't find the tape locally so opted for the Hogue grips. Problem solved.

I haven't done that to a SIG because I don't own one, but have put skate board tape on front and back straps of .22 caliber match pistols to improve my grip. Ugly? Oh, yes! Effective? Very.

I have the tape on the frontstrap of my 228.

I tried putting it on the sides and backstrap too.
I didn't keep it on there because
1-the tape has a hard time sticking to the slick as snot plastic
2-it grabbed onto my palm funny and my hand wasnt in the right position if i picked the gun up or drew it

I wish someone made slim grips like the factory ones but with a better surface. The Hogue overmolds are too round.

Has anyone put anti-skid tape on the backstrap...
Yes. I had similar troubles with my CZ75s. I put skateboard tape on the frontstap, and I was very happy with the improved grip. I then decided I wanted to reduce slipping in back, so I added another piece of skateboard tape on the backstrap. Having skateboard tape front and back really made for an excellent non-slip grip. The only downside was when the round count started climbing, the coarse skateboard tape really tore up the palm of my hand. For that reason I eventually took the tape off the backstrap, as it was beginning to do more harm than good.

No, but I put some on the handle of the 15" adjustable wrench that I carry in the saddlebags on my scoot.

Not on a SIG, but on a CZ75B, both on the front and backstrap. Big improvement over the slick metal and doesn't noticeably increase the size of an already big grip.

I am a fan of the front strap grip tape. Almost every pistol I own has grip tape on the front strap. It offers a sure grip.

Tape on grip

At a local gun show I picked up a scate board kit, for glock pistols, two of the strips were skinny slightly curved bits, fit great on the back of my grips, (G19) left and right at rear.My hands do not sweat, so this system worked a treat.

Just get Hogue grips for $15 from CDNN or cheaperthandirt. They work great, and look much better.

As much as I love 1911's [I have 7] when a Sig P220 came along for $350.00 I jumped on it . So far every last person that have ever shot it [including me] has been uttlerly impressed. This gun has beeen totally reliable from the start. I also was under the impression the factory grips left much to be desired. A set of Hogues soon were applied. A complete pistol if there ever was one. I let a couple LEO Armorers shoot it and their impression was that Sigs never produced guns with as sweet a trigger as this one. Very impressive. I have to believe this is one of the guns that will be pryed from my fingers ....

Yup, never thought about it until I handled two of my friend 229's.
They are both U.S. Air marshals in the DFW area, and both of their 229 (.357SIG, mine .40SW) have the tape on front and back strap.

Unable to get the die-cut forms they have I went to Home Depot and cut down the 2" Out Door tread from 3M, works just as well as theirs, just not as preformed.

I like it allot.

i decided to add the grip tape to my glock too. i had hogue grips on a p-90 and a m1911 and while they are very comfy and look alright, i wouldn't recommend them for a defensive pistol. rubber gives great grip when dry but when wet it gets real slippery. what are the chances that you will have sweat, blood or some other liquid on your hands when you need that pistol the most? willing to bet your life on it?
