Does anyone reload 7.62X39mm ammunition? I was wondering this because there aren't too many people that make 7.63X39 that is brass and boxer primed and affordable for shooting through AKs and SKSs. Is it possible to reload 7.62X39 cheaper than you can buy the Wolf steel cased, berdan primed stuff? Does anyone know where to get 7.62X39 brass? Thanks.

In theory yes, but after you factor in the (my time is money) quotient NO. I reload x39 to get ammo that does things factory ammo doesn't do, when I want to blast away I keep a couple cases of steel cased monarch on hand.

Does anyone know where to get 7.62X39 brass?
anyplace that sells reloading components.....provided the stuff is in stock, but hell that goes for every cartridge

Winchester, Remington, Lapua, IMI and a few more of the usual suspects. 7.62x39 brass is hardly an exotic.

Krochus is right on target with his comments.

If you're only looking for 'random distribution' accuracy, reloading will never be cheaper than bulk-buy mil surp blasting ammo.

I started reloading because comm'l & milsurp 7.62x39 both use the wrong bullet diameter for my barrel; and I wanted to see what accuracy my carbine could do with the right ammo.

As for brass, mine is mostly recycled PMC and FC, with some Winch & R-P.

I know that many manufacturers have 7.62X39 ammo. However, it costs close to the price of other rifle rounds (.308, .270, etc.). I can't find a maker that has brass cased 7.62 in a bulk price.

I bought some Win 7.62x39 brass from Midway a few months ago. I can load QUALITY hunting ammo for the x39 for what the cheap Remington FMJ crap cost in my area. Read the threads krocus has in his signature. That's where I started, and I'm shooting deer out to 200yds with a mini-30.

Personally, I prefer to get factory ammo, not brass, and reload it after I've used it once.

If you must buy virgin brass, prvi is very good, and is usually a bit cheaper than the big names. Try grafs: http://www.grafs.com/product/246087
500 pcs for $142.45 (+ 4.25 Shipping) isn't bad. Don't see any loaded prvi available though.

Fiochi makes it with brass and they are boxer primed. Shoots pretty good too. Got a case of it from Cabelas a couple of months ago, but it is hard to find right now like everything else.

I've reloaded it for a while. I like my ammo better than the cheap Wolf stuff, and so does my rifle. Save money? Sort of, but what was the real tale was when there was no 7.62x39mm ammo to be had in this 1.5 horse town, I was still shooting. I got all my components through Midway. Last time I looked, they were out of the Winchester brass in that flavor, which is what I use a lot.

as said the 'time factor' is important to consider when loading 'blasting/plinking' ammo.
I have a 189 series Mini 30 w/the .310 bore that I've loaded some good shooting ammo for useing the Hornady VMax .310 and the Win .310 123gr sp.
I've had some promiseing results on paper with the Speer .308 150gr Spitzer sp that I consider is better for whitetail at ranges past about 75 yds. have'nt taken one with that load yet, I use my M30 so far for doe tags with the 123gr Win slug. all one shot drops but again at fairly close range.
even with the 150 gr slug load I consider this round effective only inside 150 yds unless very good placement. (for whitetails)

Over the years I have collected enough brass cases to finally use the dies and the box of Hornady SP I bought 20 or so years ago. The first thing I found about with this 'free range brass' was about half was small rifle primer and about half was large primer. Other than that the procedure was the same as any other bullet. As to if these were 'better'; or cheaper than the Wolf stuff I don't know. Probably not cheaper. I haven't shot them yet as I am collecting funds to get either a Remington or CZ bolt gun in that caliber. That way I won't have to get down on my old knees and scrounge for this precious brass. Actually if and when I get the bolt gun I probably will break down and order some brass to reload. Imagine that to actually pay for brass.

Do I reload for 7.62 x 39? You bet, mainly for better ammo. I'm retired so time is money isn't a factor.

BTW just what is this time is money? Think about it while you're watching some stupid program like American Idol.

Not hardly. I'd rather watch paint dry, or reload 1 million rounds on a single stage.

I'd rather have my testicles pounded flat with a wooden mallet than watch reality TV program.

As for time vs money, time spent reloading plinking x39 is time I could have spent reloading a cartridge where there is $$ to be saved. Like 30/06 for example.

I laughed out loud at that one, but I don't know....tough call on that one. :D

I have a great idea.

A reality show on reloading 7.62x39 for accuracy and speed.:neener:

The winner gets to shoot all the losers ammo supply.:cuss:,
then gets to go on an all expense paid hunt.:D
What do you think?

Hey Gig,

I have several rifles that shoot 7.62X39, and they are not all the same bore size. There are two AKs, two Russian SKS and a very fine Chinese SKS, a Colt AR-15, and a Ruger Mini 30. I bought most of these guns 15 or more years ago and decided then that I would need a supply of ammo to feed them. I made a good buy on a thousand rounds of Lapua 7.62X39, and it was good stuff with Boxer primers. After shooting the original ammo, I reload for all the guns using my own 150 grain hard cast Loverin design bullets with gas checks. For the AR and the Ruger, I use my cast bullets after being lubed and sized to .309 and .310. For the other guns, I lube them in a .312 sizer that really does not size them at all. I also made a large purchase of Russian 123 grain full metal jacket bullets and use them on some occasions.

Obviously I have never had a need to purchase the Wolf and other similar ammo. I try to stick with buying reloadable Boxer primed ammo so I can then use it to make my own.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

I go along with David Wile above. I cast my own bullets and cost of primer is .01 cent and .02 cents for powder. Time is not a factor for a retired person. Can you shoot 7.62 x 39 for 3 cents a round?

clue us in on the source of 1c primers?
I have a Mini30, tapped the gas pipe 8-32 for a set screw to convert to straight pull bolt (easily removed for semi-auto) and have a Lee mold for 155gr slugs but haven't loaded any yet.

Bought out a store closing out a number of years ago. Bought all the sleeves of primers they had SR, LR, SP, and LP. Paid $50 for a sleeve of 5,000 primers. This was long before the shortage. Was I trying to hoard, no. It would be the same thing as if I went into an auto parts store and was able to buy Mobil 1 or Pennzoil Platimum for $ .50 a quart.

I was lucky as I had $1000 on me at the time. Doesn't happen very often, thats for sure.
