I just found out yesterday that the 7.62x39 brass Yugo ammo that i bought a year ago as Berdan primed has BOTH Berdan and Boxer primer holes and actually have Boxer primers fitted! What a bonus! It means i have 1280 more reloadable SKS ammo than i thought i had. Luckily there are no pressure signs, and i will reload them low with cast boolits. Anyone else ever seen this?

Lol! I knew that was coming. I will try to get a pic with my crappy camera. Have never loaded one on here before. Oh really Bainter? I think you MAY have a nice surprise coming! Rupe

Just pulled one apart. Yup, there are three holes. I will set up my 7.62x39 dies and see if I can seat a boxer primer. This is real exciting.

WooHoo! Glad to hear it kerreckt! Not often we get such a bonus! I hate to think about when i sprayed a few off and didnt bother to pick up the cases. Gotta get out there with my metal detector when this 2ft of snow melts off! Lol!

Primer seated just fine. I was trying not to think about all the ones I left on the ground. This is the greatest discovery since penicillin! Well, maybe I'm getting a little carried away but this is great!

Lol! Glad to have made at least one person happy today! Yep, it is pretty exciting stuff for us weirdo's Lol! Hopefully this will make people at least check before they throw them away. Maybe all brass Yugo cases with the stripper clips are like this. No idea why, though. Maybe they just ran out of Berdan primers.

I'm going to have start looking closer at anything that is "Berdan" primed from now on. Thanks for the heads up. Greatly appreciated.

You are very welcome kerreckt! It saves me a lot of hassle de-priming used brass and re-priming with Berdan primers, which i have been driven to, to ease my conscience from throwing away "usable" brass.

OK .............i give up! This is such a *****awful system of uploading images!...........every time i try to upload to Photobucket the password etc is changed, the site is sooo slow, etc. If you really need a pic, email me and i will send one.

I have wasted enough time on this, so i guess you can choose not to believe it if you so wish, if it so depends on a pic. Just check your brass before you toss it is the best answer.

What color sealant do yours have kerreckt? Mine have red sealant. On another forum a guy is saying the Yugo ones with green sealant are Boxer primed.

rupe, pics are EASY here. Don't worry about photobucket.

Hit the "Post Reply" button, then find the "Manage Attachments" button. That will let you upload a pic from your computer right to THR.

No problem.

Now for some REAL fun?

Hit the image button (
insertimage.gif
) or type the image tags ([noparse]
[/NOPARSE]) and then right click on your attached image and copy and paste it's new url in between the tags, like this:

[noparse]
attachment.php
[/noparse]

You'll get this:

All that to say, it looks to me like a berdan case that was punched through with a boxer-type decapping pin. I've done that accidentally a number of times. (Mostly on .30 Carbine cases.)

Usually the berdan primers are odd enough in size that you can't just get a boxer primer to fit, but it looks like they did.

Nope, they are ALL like that.........and others have found the same with these Yugo brass SKS ammo. This isnt an accidental punch-through by me...........i actually deprimed it hydraulically because i thought it was Berdan! The others are all the same.

The primer dimensions are close. Berdan diameter .2175" X .104" tall. Large pistol diameter .2118" X .120", large rifle .128" tall. Dimensions are nominal. I have some brass, will have to see if I have a reamer.

I havent tried repriming yet but kerrekt above did and says it was fine. I sometimes convert my berdan brass anyway and sometimes use the ball-bearing trick to reduce the primer pocket diameter, so it wont be a problem to me if they are a little loose. Of course i could also maybe transfer the anvil from an old boxer and place it in a new berdan primer too. Lots of ways to skin a cat.............

No, these primers were not crimped in and came out OK with a sharp hydraulic tap with a hammer.

Not crimped and already converted to Boxer makes me strongly suspect somebody already converted them before you bought them.

And it wasn't Yugoslavia when those cases were loaded for their military.

I'll go farther and say (I think it should be obvious) that they can't really be built as BOTH, because the anvil is part of the primer pocket with Berdan priming, and that's the part that's punched through in these. Someone definitely set out to do this.

You can tell it's not a one-step operation, as the center hole isn't concentric with the two smaller Berdan flash holes. Someone came along later and reused these cases.

I looked inside some steel cases, made in Russia, dated 94. There is a center hole, which is centered. But it's not large enough to fit my Lee decapping rod, which is now shattered.

OK well.......i finally got to the bottom of this! Turns out that, while i have been away working in MN for 8 months, my stepson decided to convert some 7.62x39 ammo from Berdan to Boxer without telling me. It was these rounds that i de-primed and discovered. Darn it! Apologies to all!
