hey guys. has anyone shot a Kahr MK40? looking for a ccw and am seriously looking at a Kahr in 40S&W . not too keen on poly, so options are the k40 or mk40. just curious as to the difference in recoil between the 2. would like to be able to do some range practice without beating myself up too bad. difference between the 2 is 3.5" barrel and 3" barrel. appreciate any input.

I carry this MK40 occasionally. Its recoil is moderate. Short snappy recoil you'd expect from a .40. But the weight of the gun helps decrease the felt recoil. It is very small - small enough that I've often carried it in my front pocket. I believe I've actually even carried it in a jeans pocket - not easy to do with any gun of size. It's heavy for pocket carry though.

I anticipate you'll like it and I'd predict it is much more manageable than their polymer versions.

don't plan on carrying all the time, mainly in car or jacket pocket. i've read the accuracy is pretty good, do you have any opinions? is it fun to shoot or more of a chore? i'm used to shooting a 92fs and BHP 40

Car or jacket pocket would be a cinch with this gun. I doubt it would be as fun as the other two, but they're much larger. Wish I could say it's all kinds of fun to shoot, but I don't feel like it is. I do, however, feel like it's perfect for the job it's designed to perform: hide for years and then save the day when you are least expecting to need it. And yes, it's pretty accurate, but I am only talking about defense-accurate.

I have had an MK40 since they first came out.
It has never not fed, fired, and extracted. It is as accurate at 15 yards and on in as about any gun I own or have owned. It has a great trigger, good nightsights, and is built like a Swiss watch. It is my hot weather carry gun.
It is a heavy little sucker. But that's not all bad shooting the hot .40 rounds. I experimented with the small 3" 1911's for awhile and they were nothing but trouble to get or keep running.
Not my little Kahr. It is much more easy to shoot accurately than most snubby .38's. The recoil is milder than the light or ultra light snubby .38's loaded with +p's. I'd stay away from the polymer guns. I've been reading about too many quality control issues wih them. And they don't seem to have the same level of finish as the metal Kahrs..

thanks for the input guys. Now...would there be any advantage to go with the the slightly bigger and heavier K40 as far as shootability? or maybe even go with the MK9 ? I want to be able to shoot this little guy for fun and practice.

I have a MK40 which is my carry gun. I like steel guns and I feel if you start out with a steel gun, weight seems to be less of a factor. Recoil is not that bad. I have small hands, so the gun fits better than if I had large hands IMO.

As with most other handgun/caliber choice issues, this one is pretty much influenced by subjective considerations.

I don't own Kahrs because I dislike their triggers, but I occasionally get the opportunity to shoot them since a small number of our folks own them. They seemingly aren't as popular as other makes/models as off-duty weapons in my area, nor do they show up very often in the CCW classes.

I know a guy in my unit who has owned & carried a K40 for a number of years, however. He said it's always been reliable for him, and he's used it for one of his IDPA guns for a while. Due to the overall weight, though, he's replaced it as his primary off-duty weapon with a S&W 442 .38 Spl J-frame. FWIW, while I've never particularly cared for the Kahr triggers, I've found his K40 to be a decent pistol. Reasonably accurate, too. Just heavy for its size, although the increased weight seems to make the K40 a controllable pistol.

Another fellow brought a MK40 through the range one day. He'd just bought it and hadn't yet had the time to shoot it, so I gave him the opportunity to run 3+ boxes through it before he tried to qualify with it. It had more recoil than he was expecting (carrying a full-size semiauto for a duty weapon, he might've had less experience with compact pistols), and he invited me to help him break it in. ;)

I found the little pistol pretty heavy for its size, and quite frankly I prefer my G27 from the perspectives of controllability, accuracy, ergonomics and overall weight for such a small pistol. As much as these things rely on subjective considerations, however, that shouldn't be given more weight than anyone else's opinion.;)

The MK40 exhibited normal functioning during the 'break in', and the new owner qualified with it. The next time he came through the qualification range, though, he still wasn't as pleased with the controllability of the little gun as he'd expected. I somehow doubt he'd been doing a lot of practice, though. From my perspective, his primary use of the longer magazine seemed to negate the advantage of the smaller grip frame in the first place, but he said he needed the longer gripping surface to help him control the pistol.

I also agree that if I were to be interested in a Kahr, I'd choose one of the metal-framed .40 S&W models, too.

I believe choosing the larger Kahr negates the great advantage of the gun's compactness. It is really quite compact and easy to conceal. If I were doing it over, I might go with the 9mm, but that's mainly because I now have a more favorable impression of the caliber than I used to. I would think the 9 would be more comfortable (not to mention cheaper) to shoot.

Because of our conversations of late, I actually chose to carry my mk40 today. I can easily forget it's there after carrying my GLOCKs.

After serious consideration and reading alot, I believe I'm going to seriously consider the 9mm. As much as I like my BHP 40, it has about all the recoil I'm
comfortable with, and I definately want to be able to go out and have some fun with my new pistol. I'd hate to spend $600 + on something I can't practice with and enjoy at the same time! Besides, with the wide variety of ammo available for the 9mm, a good +p defense load should be more than adequate to stop any BG's, if God forbid, the need ever arises.

Thom,
Let us know how you make out with this. I'm also looking at the MK40/MK9 thing. Thanks.

Not Your Model..

But for the record, I'm Very pleased with my KAHR P9. Ideal for CCW. Light weight, easily concealed and I feel comfortable with the 7 or 8 round mags of 124 Gr. 9MM JHP's.

FYI, KAHR is on the short list (5) of personal carry weapons for the NYPD.

Take Care
