Anyone still make hammer shroud grips?

A long time ago (insert either "in the Jurassic era," or "in a galaxy far away"), I recall having seen aftermarket snub revolver grips that had an integral hammer shroud. I've done a search here in the revolver forum, and on the net via Google, but haven't turned up anything. I'm expecting that the company has since closed its doors. Does anyone know if these are still available?

Thanks,

I believe Bianchi marketed grips such as those you describe. Haven't seen them advertised or in any retail establishments for years. I have seen a couple of sets at gun shows, over the years.

They were made by Pachmayr for Bianchi International, and fit S&W K-frame/round butt revolvers only. Bianchi dropped them after law enforcement agencies switched to automatics, and Pachmayr didn't continue them, probably for the same reason - too little market.

I see them turn up occasionally in gun dealer or gun show junk boxes. Keep an eye out and you may find a pair. Hint: they are made from a brown rubber material, not black - which is more common otherwise. Also they will be packaged under the Bianchi brand name.

Well, looking at the box end flap on the new Bianchi 'Lightning Grips' I have here on my desk, they were made for four revolvers: S&W J-frame Chief's Special (RB), S&W K-frame M19/10 (RB), Colt 'D' Detective Cobra (Post 1967), and Colt .45 Govt Commander. On the side of the box, they do state "Mfg exclusively for Bianchi Gunleather by Pachmayr". Mine are the S&W K-frame size - purchased new last fall from CDNN Investments for a song. Sadly, the dog-ugly grips are just too ugly for a S&W... but they do protect the hammer of my new 2" M10-11. They were on for <1 minute when I put the UM's Combats back on ... later some service wood grips. I am just glad that no one saw my beautiful 10 with those things on!

To put their looks in proper perspective, if they made them the right size, I still wouldn't put them on my .454 SRH, undoubtedly my ugliest revolver.

Check CDNN - or, if you can use mine, contact me... but be forewarned... they are real ugo's!

Thanks for the offer, Stainz! I have a Detective Special that I'm trying to modify, so I think that yours would be a slightly large fit!

CDNN is out, I checked about 2 weeks ago.

Regardless of what might have been planed, I don't believe Pachmayr made this grip for anything but the K-R.B.

Someone does make an accessory hammer shroud for Colt D-frame revolvers. Require drilling and tapping three holes in the frame though.

You're right, Fuff! The company is Waller & Sons. It's a duplicate of the original shroud that Colt used to make way back when. Cylinder & Slide shop offers these on an installed basis for $98 or so. I've been wanting to have the trigger worked on for this DSII that I have, and have been considering having the shroud installed. Like you said, this would require that some mounting holes be drilled and tapped into the frame. It would be nice to avoid having to do this, so when I recalled seeing these grips, I wanted to see if they were still available. Looks like I missed out! :(

FWIW,

Bianchi defintiely made the Lightning grips for both the J- and K-frame round butt Smiths--- I have one of each. The boxes, as mentioned, also indicate they were to be made for the Colt D-frame and Government Model. I've seen illustrations of the G.M. Lightnings (finger-grooved Pachmayr neoprene, brown instead of black; they do NOT cover/shroud the hammer), but don't believe they ever entered full production. The idea of providing the Lightning for the Colt D-frames was probably scrapped when they realized the first models (S&W J- & K-frame) weren't selling well and Colt already offered an alternative with their screwed-on hammer shroud.

Make 'em yourself. If you have any woodworking skills, they'd be fairly easy. Saw a gun with this type of grip on Gunbroker, and they were UGLY. Big and clunky too.
