I think the 500 has better ballistics than a run-of-the-mill 45-70 cartridge. That's impressive, but, besides shooting that beast for a few laughs, I think it's a waste of money.
Here's my reasoning: all the guns I own, I shoot the snot out of, and even if one had the money to afford the rounds for the S&W, the human body was not meant to handle that much blast and recoil on a prolonged basis, thus leading to flinch, carpal tunel, and possibly arthritis, with even a more conservative practice regimen.
-It's far too much of a specialty piece. I like my guns and calibers to be multi-taskers and generalists.
I'm of the school, because of the awesome responsibility it is to wield a firearm, of knowing my piece inside and out, and that means shooting it alot, a whole lot.
-Try shooting the 500 more than 50 rounds of hunting ammo. I'm fairly big, laugh at the recoil and blast of a 44mag, and I was done, completely done after a box of .454casull WHICH IS WEAKER THAN THE 500.
I have spoken.
