Are there any revolvers that are stronger than the Smith and Wesson 500 and 460XVR frame? If so, who are they and what do they fire?

What size animals can these rounds take down?

None. It takes a man with a gun to fire one.

A man can take down a wide variety of animals using this round.

Cemantics I know but we need to use the language correctly if we expect the antis to. i.e. Guns dont kill people as they are inanimate objects. People kill people, perhaps using guns...or knives...or hammers...or cars...

EghtySx,

OK, using the appropriate semantics,

What size animal would a man be able to kill "firing" the Smith & Wesson 500, and "using" a heavy 500 S&W Magnum round, say a 400-440 grain , travelling at 2000 FPS?

I'd reckon that the SRH in .454 is every bit as strong as an X - also Freedom Arms revo's are tough as nails - even more so many reckon than a Ruger.

Add to that - and keeping within load limits, the BFR I have in 45-70 is tough too.

Since 50 caliber is the largest that civilians may legally own, this should be the most powerful.

The 44 Magnum has taken every game animal on the planet. The 50 S&W should as well.

As long as we're being picky...

It's Semantics, with an "S".

Cool name though. If "EghtySx" is a reference to Agent 86 of Control, I give my sincere condolences on the passing of Don Adams.

I believe that even the .357 can lay claim to the achievement of haven taken every game animal on the planet.

Having used Revolvers and Single Shot pistols to take many head of big game using hard cast bullets, I would dare say that the 500 S&W loaded with a 440 grain hard cast bullet would more than likely penetrate length wise any critter that walks with the exception of an Elephant and possibly a Cape Buffalo. I have put a 325 grain hard cast bullet length wise of a Moose at 60 yards from a 430 JDJ. Muzzle vcelocity was only 1720 FPS. I have completely penetrated Musk Ox with a 265 grain hard cast bullet fron a 41 magnum at 80 yards at 1400 FPS muzzle velocity. These hard cast bullets in the 19-21 BHN are almost like shooting a solid bullet.

P95Carry: That's some BIG artillery you're sportin!!!

Shoot Craps: THe .44 Magnum, which used to be "the most powerful handgun in the world, and could blow...head(s) clean off" is probably the largest caliber that I would be comfortable with outta all the choices. Its still a powerful animal and man stopper. How do you think it compares in power comparisons with its 500 S&W Big brother?

JohnKSa: .357 is a great Round for game and defense. Didn't Dan Wesson use to have a .357 Super Magnum? How does this compare to the .357 Mag?

To all, what has more power, the 500 S&W, or the S&W 460 XVR?

Define POWER. There is no such thing as overkill but there is such a thing as not dead enough. Neither of these revolvers would be considered in the "not dead enough" category if the right bullet was used. Load the 460 S&W with a good hard cast bullet in the 370 grain weight and it would be suffecient for anything that walks. The factory 200 grain SST would not be my choice of bullet for anything bigger than Whitetail deer.

If you really want to be that pedantic, what about a woman using the gun, or even a person of neutral gender?

Should we be worried about all the minority groups that are now lining up to lynch each and every one of us, simply because you were inadvertantly descriminatory against them.

Thanks alot, now I will have to stay awake all night now, on gaurd. I'm leaving to buy some more stay awake pills. :) :)

haha, but I do see your point... :)

Yes, you can still find them around, but you'll have to load your own ammo. By any definition, it's more powerful than the .357Mag.

What I was getting at is that the .44Mag is universally accepted to be more powerful than the .357Mag and the 500Mag is universally accepted to be more powerful than the .44Mag.

Yet in its day, the .357Mag was used to down pretty much anything that could be considered a game animal. Which says that the 44mag and 500 will certainly be capable of the same feat with the proper shooter holding the grip. ;)

I just had to let y'all know that I shot one of the S&W 460 today. It's awesome. :) :) What about a BFR 45-70? That is a huge revolver.

I think the 500 has better ballistics than a run-of-the-mill 45-70 cartridge. That's impressive, but, besides shooting that beast for a few laughs, I think it's a waste of money.

Here's my reasoning: all the guns I own, I shoot the snot out of, and even if one had the money to afford the rounds for the S&W, the human body was not meant to handle that much blast and recoil on a prolonged basis, thus leading to flinch, carpal tunel, and possibly arthritis, with even a more conservative practice regimen.

-It's far too much of a specialty piece. I like my guns and calibers to be multi-taskers and generalists.

I'm of the school, because of the awesome responsibility it is to wield a firearm, of knowing my piece inside and out, and that means shooting it alot, a whole lot.

-Try shooting the 500 more than 50 rounds of hunting ammo. I'm fairly big, laugh at the recoil and blast of a 44mag, and I was done, completely done after a box of .454casull WHICH IS WEAKER THAN THE 500.

I have spoken. :D

More powerful handgun than the S&W 500?

Yes, there are, but they don't look safe to fire IMO.

I've seen a revolver chambered in .600 Nitro Express and a single shot .700 Nitro Express. Both shooters looked hurt and very shaken by the experience, and both lost control of their weapons when fired (not dropped mind you, the recoil sent both pistols cartwheeling up and back behind the shooter).

Looked like it would have been a serious injury if they had actually been aiming with thier head square behind the sights. The .600 and .700 are legal despite being over .50 cal; somthing about them being "sporting rounds" or so I'm told. After seeing one shot of each though, I think I'd feel safer with a spear.
