Hi-

my friend is traveling to Canada soon and wants to know if anyone has experience taking guns to or from Canada. Specifically-if you are not going hunting or to a shooting match and are carrying non restricted weapons.

He wants to go target shooting- but has no specific plans.

Well many moons ago when the world was more free.............

As I understand it the best way is to get a small game license and bring a non-semi auto rifle.

I am not a big fan of the Government of Canada. In fact,
we have had issues, up close and personal.

I would recommend not trying to take guns into Canada.
In fact, based on my previous experience with Canadian
customs, I would recommend staying here in the U.S.,
and not spending any money in that Socialist cesspool to our north.

I feel sorry for the people of Canada, they deserve a better government than they have. But then, they voted for the dimwits.
Come to think of it, we may not be much better off here, with our bunch
of dimwits.

But at least we have concealed-carry. For now, anyway.

For hunters and persons going to competitions, it's not all that difficult. You may be asked for some sort of paperwork to support your claim of going hunting or target shooting.

Up to three long guns may imported on a single temporary registration certificate, which is obtained at the border crossing. This document costs $25, as of last October, when three of us took seven rifles into Canada.

The certificate may be downloaded and filled out prior to arrival at the border (but NOT SIGNED, until in the presence of the Canadian Customs agent).

With the new government planning to dump the long-gun registration system, these present regulations may well be changed. Handguns are a different matter, and importation is controlled more tightly.

Walter,

We actually just voted in (barely, but in) a new government, one not quite so intent on banning everything related to firearms. We'll see soon if it helps...

For bringing firearms into Canada, it's not quite as painful as it sounds, but for some specific advise, either call the Canada Firearms Center directly or have a read at www.canadiangunnutz.com, lots of guys that know they're stuff there.
